Headphone remote

I currently have a 3G iPod, and am very pleased with it. However, I was looking at the new ones, and am tempted apart from one thing - is there no longer any way of having a 'wired remote' on the headphones? I use this feature a lot right now when travelling (e.g. on a plane), so I can start / stop / adjust volume without needing to reach for the iPod itself. Surely this is a 'downgrade'??!

I have the same concern. I use the remote on my 3g all the time. It's very convenient not having to pull out the ipod all the time to simply change a song or adjust the volume. I use my iPod on shuffle most of the time so I'm not moving around through the menus and stuff like a lot of people seem to do. I really hope they come out with an inline remote. There are a lot of folks out there who could care less about the remote but what about us folks that use it almost exclusively? We're customers too. I've never bought a brand new iPod before. The two I have are used. I was so tempted to buy the new 5g but will have to wait and see how all this shakes out before making that impulse buy now.

I have to agree about the remote thing. I think most of the controversial changes to the iPod can be reasonably argued one way or another, but on this point Apple definitely screwed up. Still, I think we will see some creative solutions to this. I guarantee you we will see a wired remote that connects to the dock port. What would be even cooler is a short-range RF or Bluetooth remote with a tiny receiver that connects to the dock port--my one annoyance with the wired remote, and the main reason I stopped using it very much, was that as I moved around it would constantly get in the way. A small wireless remote that you either hold in your hand or wear on you somewhere would be awesome.

I hate the remote. I bought one for my 1G when they came out. Just had to have it, a toy for my toy. Then I wondered why I even bothered. I got one included with my 3G when I upgraded. Only used it long enough -- a week! -- to discover that the wire casing had split. Exchanged it for a new remote, and that one I never even opened the sealed packaging. I'm perfectly happy that the iPod video I ordered yesterday doesn't have a wired remote.

Not to say I'm right and you're wrong. It's a preference thing, but I'm just likely in the majority of opinion. So Apple first stopped packing them in to cut costs, discovered they were selling precious few of them after market, and now they've cut them out altogether.

I have never used the remote, the original headphones were long enough for a giraffe to listen to an Ipod. What do you guys do with the extra 2' of cable?
When the ipod first came out, I was disappointed that there was no digital display, as this was something standard on all minidisk players, which were excellent during their era. But then I came to keep the ipod in a reachable vicinity.

I really hope they have wireless remote solutions soon. I've been using the airclick on my 3G for a while now and am very used to it!

"What do you guys do with the extra 2' of cable?" Wrapped it around the remote and stuck it all in a drawer. But that was me.

I discovered, for my preferences, that the iPod was much like a remote itself. I did use the inline remote that came with my minidisc players. But although not a great deal larger than the iPod, I didn't find the MD units themselves as convenient to use without the remote.

"What do you guys do with the extra 2' of cable?"

Imagine winter. I have the ipod in the inner pocket of my jacket, the remote in my pocket and the phones - guessed it - in my ears. Since my hands are mostly in my pockets, too, it is very convenient to pause or change volume without any hassle.

A display with a display of the song playing and the possibility to change the rating would be nice, too. But this is rather a special request, I guess... :-)

the ability to use the wireless remote without having to put the iPod in the dock would be awesome!!
