Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
Or do u just want all the other benefits associated with it.
If you actually look at the development of the ipod line, this is the first one to really clash and do something different... relating to the screen size and click wheel size.
# 1 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I don't really care about video - the psp screen is way better for that. Plus it's not exactly a new revolution - I have been watching TV shows on my phone for a while now. In fact I currently have a dozen episodes of lost on my phone (Sony Ericsson P910). It also has a 2.5inch screen but you can flip it sideways and it is in widescreen format (unlike the new ipod).
But so long as they are throwing the feature in at no extra charge, then i'm not complaining. But it's not going to make me buy it. What I do like is thinner/lighter more battery life and more storage (than mine anyhow).
I only have a 2yr old 30gig 3rd generation ipod right now, so with or without video the new ipod is a good step up for me. If I can get a headphone remote for this thing, then I'm buying one.
# 2 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I'm not. Capacity is my deciding factor, and 60 GB is still way to small for my tastes. I'm waiting for at least 80 GB.
# 3 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
It's certainly 5g iPod, so I will buy it by Cristmas. I knew about this iPod in May, but nobody belived me until now.

# 4 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
me! *rasies hand*...i wanted an ipod for a while before i got my mini but i've always been in the market for a video player too...now my wants have been answered by this...im ordering it asap
# 5 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
getting it for new design and video playback
# 6 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I'm getting it for all the features including the video support. I have a full library of pre-converted videos for my PSP but due to the fact that a 1 GB memory stick duo goes for $150 then, 30 of them would cost way too much. I know the PSP has a better screen and battery life, but it's simply not cost effective to have more than 3 memory stick duos to hold 6 movies.
# 7 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
all ive got is 25 gigs of harddrive space left so maybe ill get the 30 gig although the cool factor of 60 gigs is there.. but black 30 gig is my best bet
# 8 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I've already ordered one and while video support was no deal breaker, it had a lot to do with why I got it. I'm not expecting to sit down and watch LOTR special edition on it, but I can cart around my under 5 minute clips of QT home movies made of my daughter. Again, not a reason in and of itself to buy the 5G, but when looking for the machine that was a true upgrade from my 1G mini, the photo AND video + better battery life, improved sound quality, and enough capacity to carry music, podcasts, photos, and videos without hurting my head too much all added up to a "time to buy" for me.
# 9 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
Not me. I want a new ipod. The Nano looks cool, but I want the storage space for mp3s and photos. Video is just a plus that I doubt I'll use too often. Most likely I'll only use it to show off it's capabilities... and in the even I ever miss an episode of Lost and I'm too lazy to Bittorrent it.

# 10 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
Bah. Video playback == battery hungry gimmick.
20 hrs battery life (for music) + smaller form factor == teh winner
Now awaiting first hand confirmations on battery life before I part with my $$ and retire my 3G 40GB (currently sporting an earth-shattering 1-hour battery life).
# 11 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
i dono, 1 movie and a couple of songs is good enough considering the size factor. However the sad thing is this iPod still fails in comparison to the archos PVP :( . but i guess iPod makes up with its price.
im getting the 60GB black:cool:

6g huh?
You're way ahead of us. Tell me where to get one! :D
# 14 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
i was just looking for an ipod before the 12th, and the video extra size of the 30gb pushed me over.. but then i realized i needed 60gb and the battery power is better
# 15 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?

Same here. I purchased a 20 GB 3rd generation iPod about two years ago. I now have 35 GB of music stored on an external hard drive--so only half of my music is available to me on my iPod at any given time.
The main reason that I just ordered the 5th generation iPod was the increased capacity (60 GB). But, I also like the idea of the color screen (mainly for my album art), the longer battery life and the ability to store photos. The video feature is a nice benefit, but I don't expect to use it all that often.

# 17 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I did, then i realized that i have a music player that can haul around my entire library, has a color display, and is sexy, so i just pretended how not cool it would be to carry around videos

To be honest, the only reason I'd buy the new iPod is for the video-playback. I don't have enough music to fill up 30GB, even less 60GB. :)
# 19 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I was really hoping for at least an 80gb, but am getting the 60gb to hold all my music, then i'll upgrade in another 18 months or so.
# 20 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I'm jest getting it because my 3g 15gb completely stopped working the other day so I need a new ipod. The fact that it is thinner and has a bigger screen is why I opted for it. I dont really plan on using the video function at all, but maybe
# 21 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I dont understand why none of you like the video feature. I think its the second best thing that happened to ipod, after all it is an mp3 player : ) , way better then photo viewing feature. I think all of you are forgetting that you can connect your ipod to your tv. Obviously no one in his right mind will watch a 2 hour film on a 2.5 in screen, you will need glasses after few weeks, so who cares if it can only play movies for 2 hours. Thats why there is a tv out feature. You can also get a remote control for it, a dock, and ac adapter and watch which ever videos/movies you can get your hands on. So who needs a dvd player when you can fit one on the palm of your hand? Sure psp has a bigger screen but it has no tv out capability. And you have to buy special $10 mini dvds for it and watch them on that pathetic little screen, how ### is that? Obviously apple did not include video converting features in itunes because they want you to spend as much money as possible by buying movie content on itunes. Im sure they will have movies available for download soon enough, but why bother if you can rip dvds and watch them on your tv through your ipod. You can have bunch of your favorite movies and music in your pocket. All of you nuts who connect ipods to your cars, did you ever think that you can install lcd screen in your ride and connect your ipod VIDEO to it. No need for expensive in-car dvd players, and you can still have your entire music collection. All of you people who need more than 60 gb for music are plain ignorant. Who needs so many songs, you will never ever ever listen through all of them. It just like people who have whole libraries of books and never read all of them, so whats the point of having so many if you are only going to read a few? I personally think that the more features an ipod has the better. For example it would be awesome if apple would make ipods with wireless internet capabilities so you can go online on your ipod and have more pda functions to it.
So my point is that I think the more features an ipod has the better, and this movie playing capability is amazing. All of you who think otherwise then just stick to your 2nd or 3rd generation ipods and replace batteries every 2-3 years or use those generic mp3 player imitations like iriver or dell jukebox.
# 22 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
1. While the TV out is a good feature, the video encoding of movies purchased from iTunes is 320x240, which is good for the iPod screen, but when blown up full size on a computer or TV will appear pixelated. Not sufficient for watching, in my view. It may work, though, on smaller in car TVs, but only for passengers. Watching TV while driving is not a good idea and illegal in some states.
2. If you already have the DVD, why would you need to rip it to your iPod for viewing on your TV (other than for portability for an in-car system)? Ripping DVDs you do not already own is pirating and illegal. If you already have the DVD, why not watch the DVD instead?
3. To fit enough music and movies on an iPod, you have to compress it significantly losing quality. A lot of people encode at high bit rates or in lossless format, so 60GB is not enough space for some, but not all, people.

This is the main point for me. When we get a device that can do for video what DAPs did for music, then we'll be onto another revolution. In the same way that cheap, big fat hard drives and an iPod relegated my CD collection to a stack of boxes in the garage, an analogous device would do the same for my drawers of DVDs. This iPod is NOT that device even remotely.
It is what it is: a dedicated DAP with limited video functionality that happens to be capable of T.V. viewing. I daresay that if Jobs had allowed output of high quality videos even if the iPod itself couldn't display them we would not have had any sort of agreement with Disney/ABC for legal content.
I'll tip my hat to Jobs on this point: he's given just enough to the consumer to make it usable but nothing that going to rock the boat while he simultaneously tests consumer AND industry acceptance.
# 24 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
Theres much better video HD players. Iriver, creative, RCA all have had 20gb + players that are widescreen and play awesome videos. The new ipod is fine for "free upgrades" but I don't know why you wouldn't buy a competitor MP3 player if video's a big thing for you, unless you bleed apple or something.

I agree, there are much better players out there *for video*, however, I would presume that most people here are here because of digital audio player preferences, and there is nothing out there I would choose over an iPod at this time and I follow the other products reasonably well. I'm much too addicted to the ease of managing my music with iTunes and its integration with the iPod (along with the integration of podcasting and bookmarking features for all files) to stomach any of the competition in spite of some obvious advantages in some areas.
Even without video, I'd have almost certainly upgraded to the 5G with all the other features except video. However, as a cherry on top, you must admit it's a decent enough cherry ;)
# 26 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
Music playback is my main reason for buying one, the video is just an interesting sideline. Doubt I'll use it much.
# 27 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
^^ yup...musik is my thing and some music vids will be a +...and some martial arts shorts my friends make
# 28 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I bought the ipod for the music playback abilities. The video is a nice side benefit. I think I'll use it to hold music videos and a bunch of fun video clips though.
# 29 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I own a 3g 40 gig, so I want one because it's time to upgrade.. That is all..
# 30 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
While I will be purchasing it MAINLY for music, I cannot argue that the video part will also be fun. In fact I have already started resizing certain key movies that I like for the IPod. Yes I know that their are other movie players out there with more features and blah blah blah, but (and feel free to call me a Apple fanboy) they don't have the Apple brand. And I DO like the Apple brand. They build solid products that "just work", and I really don't think that this player is going to be any different.
The 2 hour battery life does not bother me since I would mainly be watching movies while traveling. And for this, I can always plug it into the cigarette adapter in my car. I have had at least one of every generation since the first, and I like they went back to sharp edges of the first and second generation.
I just wish they would let third party vendors know ahead of time so we can get decent cases at launch. But meh what can I do? That is part of what makes Apple...well Apple....

A follow up to my original reply above. I ended up buying the white 60gig, (even without the headphone remote!).
As my post suggests I wasnt that interested in the new ipod for video. BUT something strange has happened, after a few days of commuting with it, I find myself suddenly quite taken by the new ipods video playback feature    .
As well as music, I threw a couple of video podcasts and a tv show on it . and gues what, I have found it really good to have the option when I'm sitting on a ferry of either just listening to music, or having something to watch.
I dont imagine anyone ever wanting to watch a whole lot of full length movies on a screen this size. But for the kind of stuff i'm watching - i.e stuff that is really short (30 mins) and anything but cinematic - the idea of a video ipod may just have some merit.
It's surprised me - I never expected that I would be singing the praises of video on a screen this size!
# 34 Re: Who is concidering a 5g for its video playback mode?
I bought my 30 gig only for music. For navigating through playlists, the larger screen is deffinately a nice bonus, and seems to make this generation look overall a bit more aesthetically pleasing.
