Watching AVI in quicktime (for Windows)

(To moderators: I realize this is not iPod specific, perhaps w/ todays events a new forum needs to be created ala iTunes for Mac or Windows - Quicktime for Mac or Windows)

Seeing as most of my movies are in .avi format I need a way to watch them in Quicktime. I read in another thread about the 3ivx codec, however this doesn't seem to be the solution. Sound, when it works, is played back at an extremely fast speed, and in most cases doesn't play at all. So how do windows users plan on playing .avi content?

Thanks...

I have the exact same question. I have a bunch of home movies in AVI format and would like to know how to get them in the proper format to add into iTunes to then be shown on the new iPod. Is it as simple as importing into Quicktime Pro and the exporting in the iPod video format? Thanks to anyone who can help.

Yea, we really need some help here. I've got the exact same problem. I ordered my ipod and then cancelled the order cause I could not get any of my videos in proper format. I was afraid the video function would have been useless.

Even if you install the 3ivx codec, the files won't play on the iPod.

There's a sticky in this forum on how to convert videos.

Blankwire - are you saying that the only way to take existing movies (in AVI format produced using Videowave 7) is to go through your tutorial posted in this forum? Thanks.

Also, how about for future movies? Can I import them into Quicktime Pro, edit, produce and render them there? Can Quicktime Pro convert any other format to MPEG-4 or .mov easily? I can always re-render my movies into another format if they can be converted easily.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Blankwire - that tutorial only applies to importing DVD's. I have lots of .avi files on my hard drive (w/ no DVD). How can I play these?

Blankwire and SephCast - you guys are AWESOME! I used 3GP_Converter and converted an AVI and imported it into iTunes. Wored perfectly! Thank you very, very much.
