Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
Should I get mine engraved since it's free? It says can't be returned.. but I don't plan on returning it unless there's something wrong with it. If there is, can I then return it?
Also how long can you watch low quality videos for?
Also can you get a regular ol' computerless AC adapter for this?

i dont know about the return policy i bet if u get out of the box broken tho the'll do SOMETHING. even engraved ipods have a warentee.
as for video playback 2hrs of continues playback is whats been reported. :-\ not exactly what i was expecting either.
and any power adapter that utalizes the dock will work. for exaple i still have the one from my mini.
# 2 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
i think the 20 hour battery is awesome on the new iPod. video playback will be a drain on any player. this device wasn't designed to be a dedicated video player though. it's an MP3 player. the next ipod will be the 'ipod video' or 'vpod' or whatever you want to call it. this is just the 5g iPod
# 3 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
remember thats 20 on the 60gig the 30gig is around 14-15 i think
# 4 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
any other reason NOT to get it engraved?

Where on Earth did you hear that estimate? 2 hours for video playback? I don't beliveve it.

Yes you can return it for repair/replacement if it's engraved. If it's broken on delivery or defects turn up during the one-year warranty period. You just can't return within 10 or 14 days or whatever because you just don't want it and pay the 10% restocking, get the rest of your money back. That's the only catch. Otherwise, engrave away. I ordered mine engraved.
2 hour video playback on the 30GB. 3 hours on the 60GB. 14 music on the 30GB. 20 on the 60GB. Slideshows with music, 3 and 4 hours respectively.
Yes, you can get the Apple iPod USB power adapter for $30.
Oh, the other reason not to engrave is that you may seriously lower your resell value. I got my kids' names on mine, so I wouldn't sell it anyway.

Unless you engrave it with a general slogan, quote, statement, ... it really hurts resale value. While looking for a mini, I noticed at least a few had their usernames engraved. Why would I want an iPod with someone else's username on it?
# 8 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
I never got an iPod engraved.
Because I always ended up reselling it on ebay.
or returning it. Like my nano.
I had to 14 days to return it, and decided to
return it and get the 5G iPod.
# 9 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
Well what's the resale value of iPods?
Like say next year they came out with a new version, so I wanted to sell a 30gb G5.. could I get 70-80%?

In short, yes you could.
I just sold my 20GB Click Wheel with B&W screen for $230 on eBay. I paid $269 for it. (That sale did include an iSkin and iTrip, however.)
# 11 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
and an engraving with my name and slogan would drastically decrease that value?
# 12 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
^Yes, unless you find someone with the same name who wants the same slogan as you on a used ipod.
Think of it this way, would you want an iPod that says "I love hot dogs. -Bertha Smith"
# 13 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
Depends on what you mean by "drastically." But yes it will decrease your resale value. I can't say by what exactly, because it will differ for every auction. But in the end, do what you want to do. It's kind of silly to not get something YOU want because someone else may not want it a year from now. It is after all, your iPod.
# 14 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
Yeah, and it'd be a christmas present too
I guess if I kept it for say 3-4 years I could also get like a Nano or something in the future..
I donnooooooooooooo lol
# 15 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
i love the idea of engraving. it's a great way to personalize your ipod. but naturally if you plan to sell it when the next ipod debuts, then you probably shouldn't.

Check out tech specs Mongoos: http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html
30GB: Up to 14 hours of music playback; up to 3 hours of slideshows with music; up to 2 hours of video playback
60GB: Up to 20 hours of music playback; up to 4 hours of slideshows with music; up to 3 hours of video playback
# 17 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
Ok I'm thinkin I'm gonna go for the 60gb one.. and while I don't see any reason to sell it in the future, since these things have high resale value... say a new one came out next year, then a new one the year after that.. so two years later.. 7th generation.. and it has 60-80gb or even more for $400 like this 60gb has, but is better technology, smaller, more features etc..
could I conceivably sell this one for $300 or more and only have to pay $100 or less for the new one?
Guess this is a reason not to engrave it
# 18 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
good move...
yea cause ipods are everywhere, think about it, someone who's in the market for one can find some joe schmoe selling the same thing you're selling, but without your name/slogan for the same price...
no doubt he will go to Joe...unless for some weird reason he likes your name/slogan.

# 19 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
IMO I would not get the personal engraving. I ordered the Nano early last week and then changed my mind to get the 60GB vPod. The Nano was already on its way when I called to cancel and Apple customer support said I could not return it. I thought that this sucked, but figure I coudl ebay it and get just as much money back. I called Apple support back again and sai, hey, I did not know engraving meant I could not return it...no where on the engraving page, other than buried in the fine print 2 pages deep, does it say, one you engrave it, it cannot be returned. This second apple person, said, no problem, since I was buying up to a new Ipod they would make the exception and let me return the nano (even though I had TBone engraved). They also waived the 10% restock fee. Super!!!! So I got my RMA number to return my Nano once it gets here from China and my 60GB is being processed now :-)

# 20 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
they're just waiting for someone who wants tbone engraved now
# 21 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
lol. I think ima go get it...
# 22 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
so if it's engraved..I can't return it? even within 14 days unopened?
# 23 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
It can only be returned for a manufacturer defect if it is engraved.
# 24 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
i wouldn't get mine engraved, because in the end, it doesn't effect how much the price of the ipod could be sold, however it does have other people turned away, because they don't want an ipod with someone else's words on it.
# 25 Re: Should I get mine engraved? + video playback
Oh...blah...
what if they typo'd my engraving? haha

I don't think that's possible, cause it's all computer done. Goes straight from your web-form to the factory machine which engraves it! :0
