You might look at getting a PCMCIA card that has USB 2.0..

oh come on!!! you don't know what a PCMCIA card is? how long have you had your laptop? i don't mean to offend you, so don't get mad... it's just that i am amazed. Anyway just take your laptop to the nearest IT store and ask them about the PCMCIA USB 2.0 carc just like Cameron_Talley advised

welcome to the lounge :)

try this instead...(it's cheaper!)

but make sure that it'll be compatible with the new iPod, but since it works with the PCMCIA card, make sure that it'll work with your pBook before buying it - they don't always.

Believe it or not but some PowerBooks don't have PCMCIA... like my 12". It has FW-400 and 2x USB but no USB2 or PCMCIA.

actually i'm not sure if the new iPod will support FW (bad move apple!! :() - there is no mention of FW here...

but if it's like the nano, you'll be able to charge but not sync data!!

man that sucks!!

Thanks for the responses... but you're sort of missing the point!

I have a 12" Powerbook so I have firewire and 2 USB 1 ports and no other expansion slots or anything.

What I'm after is a way to add a USB 2 port to my system... A hub? A converter socket for the firewire? Something really cheap and perfectly appropriate...

there is no way to add usb 2 port for old powerbook 12-inch. even if you buy USB 2 hub, because of original usb port slower, USB 2 hub will also be slower. therefore, I have to use slower usb port anyway. I know that is sucks. but there is nothing you can about it now. or buy new mac.

USB 2 devices usually work connected to USB1 jacks. They just downshift to the slower speed. I cannot see Apple chopping off thier own computer users. The shift to only USB was most likely a cost cutting move. This way only one version is needed to satisfy both Apple and WinTel users, who mainly are USB users.

Bah, another USB device, more swapping of USB plugs and two lonely look firewire ports on my G3...

over a sustained period, fw is better than usb2, especially on macs, even though usb2 is supposed to be 480 Mb/s as opposed to fw's 400...

I read somewhere that the reason for no firewire on the new iPod is that the firewire hardware takes up more space in the case than usb. Don't know this to be true myself and can't remember where I read it.
