Is the fullsize iPod too big/wide to be portable?

I've never really seen or held one in person
this new one is really thin but is it too wide? will it fit most pockets? will it fit in my hand comfortably?
can i jog/run with it?

It is the exact same size as the 4th gen ... the only difference is the its thinner and a bigger screen that goes to the edges and a smaller clickwheen of course

yah but I've never seen a 4th in person, or a 3rd, or 2nd or first.. so no point of reference

The new iPod is the same width as the older models. The only thing that has changed is the thickness.

Most people say the nano is too small. The iPod is one of the thinnest hard drive based MP3 players out. You can't complain.

You should know that since it has a hard drive, songs may skip if you decide to run with it.

ok i still have no reference point to judge the width of an iPod though

is it too wide or is it just right to hold in your hand while doing stuff?

Can I do exercise and stuff like a treadmill etc with it without it skipping?

Grab a standard deck of cards in the box. That's a fair approximation of the size.

Alternatively, you could just go to your local Best Buy, Circuit City, Apple Store, or any other store that sells iPods and check for yourself...

yea, the deck of cards approximation is pretty close. maybe a little bit heavier, tho.

i don't find the full size ipod to be "portable" in the sense that i find it too big to comfortably carry around in my pocket, unlike say the nano. especially if you're sitting, and your pants aren't baggy, the full-size ipod can definitely be uncomfortable. i would think you'd want to either hold it in your hand all the time (which you can, easily, as long as your hand doesn't get tired) or keep it in a bag.

It is not too wide at all. It feels about like a heavy TV remote control. Fits in all pockets that I've tried, including jeans (but not the coin pocket!).

I wouldn't run with it. I used to walk a fair bit to get around, and the 10GB first generation I had would occasionally freeze-up/skip even walking (the 5GB did not). Since the third generation this problem is gone. They rarely skip or freeze now. But running, yeah, it could cause some problems. If you primarily want it for running, you want a nano. Otherwise, the full-size is great.

Definetly.

But the question is, how long will it last, being hard drive based and all...

Its not something i'd do, but its not gunna damage it imediatly.

You're talking about a 60 GB right? I'm thinking of getting one, but i'm not too concerned about the size.

30 or 60
I'm really confused right now

I just don't see nano as an option anymore given the $50 extra upgrade

but I wouldn't mind running with it..

i have a 60 gb color which i use while running sometimes. it's ok if i hold it in my hand, but in my pocket it's just too big because it jumbles around alot and is annoying. for this reason, i'm cashing in on my 30 day return policy at best buy tomorrow to get a 60 gb video ipod, even though i have no intentions of watching video at all on it, i'm just doing it for the smaller size. it isn't heavier than the 60 gb color, is it?

I own a 3Gen, mini, and shuffle. Before I got the latter two, I used to run, jog, snowboard, etc. with the 3gen. More than a year later and its still going strong. Since I got the mini and shuffle about 6-7 months ago, I have exercised almost every day with one of them, mostly the mini. I have never had any problems, and I usually run in the mountains for about an hour a day. The nano would definitely be the better choice for running/jogging because it isn't HDD based, but the new iPod is only $50 more, and you could get a armband for it. If I had the money, I would definitely buy one and replace my mini with it.

I think it's 5.5 ounces

but just to be clear, we can all agree, despite a slight risk while running, the 30gb or 60gb video ipod is a no brainer compared to the nano right? as my sole ipod anyway

Here to sum up for you lad.

the new video ipod that just came out is one of the smallest in the ipod lineup (only beaten by the nano and shuffle)

the ipod was designed to fit perfectcally into your hand, hence why height and width never really change only depth. You can easily scroll through whatever you want with your thumb and still have it rest comfortablly in your hand.

I own the oldest 1gen ipod which were the largest of the series. It is still very nice to hold, and it isnt heavy. I jog with mine on a regular basis and it has never skipped or scratched or battery gone dead on me, and ive had it for almost 3 years now.

Ipod IS the way to go

# 21 Re: Is the fullsize iPod too big/wide to be portable?
Ok I finally saw/held/touched an iPod in person at the student store here. It was a 4G non-color (unless they don't show color when they're not activated.. it was just a demo with no songs and didnt do anything when i touched the wheel) 20gb and it was really small. Not nano-small but not as big as I thought it'd be.

So the 60gb g5 is actually going to be THINNER than this one? That's kinda shocking..

so I think I'm going to go with the 60gb if it's actually thinner than any previous iPod..

seems like it'll have good resale value too eh? Guess no engraving for me

# 22 Re: Is the fullsize iPod too big/wide to be portable?
the only way its not portable is if you buy the super-duper extended battery add-on that's as big as a car battery.

but if you get the backpack add-on for the super-duper extended battery, its gonna be portable again.

=P
