Why would people discount a brand new model of iPod (NOT vPod) even before it shows up in stores?

Even current models, before the announcement, weren't discounted much, if at all. Why have a sale on an item that's already immensely popular?

I got a 21 discount when i bought my 60gb iPod from the Apple Store.

Theirs normally a link in the weekly Apple Store newsletter email with a discount of 21 if you spend over 211.

i knew what he was talking about. its just that apple didn't release a 'vPod' or 'video iPod'...it's just an iPod that has the ability to play video. it is still mainly an audio player.

I think student discounts are for college students, not high school.

And there is no such thing as a vpod mmmkay? ;)

# 11 Re: 60g vpod promo code
you can pretty much BS your way through the student discount. There is no way to check it, at least thats what the guys at the store were saying. Don't know if it's true or not. He also said they really don't enforce the 1 ipod a year limit with the discount either.

# 12 Re: 60g vpod promo code
so i could lie and say im in college?

how would one do this.........and much off is it? if i could get the 60Gb model closer to the 30gb, i would be incredible happy.
ipod2genman at 2007-11-15 12:57:49 >
# 13 Re: 60g vpod promo code
it basically takes the tax off 30 gb is 269 and 60 gig is 369 not bad so it comes out to 300 and jus over 400
theoutsidr at 2007-11-15 12:58:45 >
# 14 Re: 60g vpod promo code
wow, all i had to do was select a college. and the 30gb comes to 269.
the 60 still doesnt come down enough for me, but that money off of the 30 is nice, that means more cash for "accessories" lol.

is it wrong to use this? and more importantly, will they check?

# 15 Re: 60g vpod promo code
Saying you are a college student when you are not in order to get a discount is one of the most clear examples of fraud I can think of.

well......my brother goes to college, would it be wrong to use his college since hes never going to buy one anyway?

# 17 Re: 60g vpod promo code
If it's not you that's in college, then it's still fraud.

What do you think?

What if your next door neighbor's son went to college? How about if you just knew somebody who went to college? Would you still be asking this question?

Realistically, nobody here can stop you from doing the right or wrong thing, but I would hope that more people around here would have the scruples to avoid misrepresenting themselves just to save a few measly dollars.

"Your mom goes to college." - Kip, Napoleon Dynamite

Sorry, couldn't resist. :P

Getting that discount is as simple as getting your brother, or another college-student friend, to buy your iPod on your behalf. If they go to an Apple Store, they will need to produce their student ID and another form of photo ID (driver license, passport, etc).

If they'll shop online at Apple's web site, they should go through the Education link and follow the directions to choose their school and shop with the discount.

Whether your brother would ever buy one or not is irrelevant--he can get as many iPods/other Apple items at their Education discount as he would like, so he can even buy one for himself or someone else at that same discount at a later time.

And of course, you would pay them back plus tip. :D

i mean, i dont want to do anything really "wrong" here, its just it says one per house hold, even if he bought it, it would be sent to my house anyway.

i get what you guys are saying though. maybe to make it totally legit, i'll just give him the money and he can order it for me.

# 21 Re: 60g vpod promo code
One way to get the student discount with no fraud that I can think of is simply to buy the iPod from a University bookstore. The Virginia Tech bookstores all carry iPods and their prices already reflect the educational discount. Now, if you don't happen to live near a university, this is probably not exactly practical :)

As for ordering it from their site, since I do go to a university and I do appreciate the $30 kickback to the "poor", I wish people wouldn't abuse it. If Apple determines that too many use it fraudently, it will either become harder to use online or they will reduce the amount of the discount.

Probably, just give one of their bookstores a call and ask. Apple likes their semi-incestuous relationships with universities :)

you can pay him order for u. ask him to give ur shipping address when checking-out. the apple store has options for the shipping address to be different from the billing address.

if u r nice to ur brother, it can a really advanced Christmas gift even!!!!

As for whether it is a good idea to use this when u r not a student urself: to each his own. My values would not allow that. So, I myself would not buy it like that! But hey, if one of my friends who is a student offers to help me out, its a legit buy!
