If yorue going to say they suck or something they most certainly do not.

I heard one yesterday at my friends house and theyre amazing. I dont know why people say they dont have bass, it had encridible bass.

I work in an audio store and we sell them so yes, I have a lot of experience with the unit. The bass response is terrible and distorted to achieve 70-60hz response with about 25-50% THD! The treble is grossly exaggerated and irritating around 8k and drops off after 12-14k so it has no high end resolution. The unit itself is very cheap flimsy and our demo is about ready to fall apart. The dock where the ipod goes is completely loose and up-close the unit will win no contests for build quality. For a mere 150 dollars you can get yourself a pair of quality multimedia speakers that even you would agree, completely discrete the bose sound dock for 1/2 the price. If you have not heard a pair of 150 2.1 speakers for a PC, then I suggests you try some out. I would be happy to list a number of brands and models, but I cant do that here because its against the rules so youll have ot pm me for suggestions. I have a lot of experience and Im trying not to make any enemies, Im just trying to guide people to a wiser decision.

Bose holds very little value and I cant honestly think of any other complete audio system for 300 dollars that sounds worse! THATS FRIGHTENING!

I dont mean to cause turmoil here, but those who like the sounddock tend to have limited audio experience and you know its true! (I said tend which does not mean everyone who owns it) There is nothing magical or special about bose or about an ipod dock. Its just completely overpriced as is every ipod system expect for perhaps the iFi which is still considered pricy but certainly has more value then the others. The cost of the sounddock is around 180 dollars. Thats a lot of markup from Bose to us, and then its a whole lot more from us to you! Bose controls that price too so we cant discount it.

Do not buy the sounddock unless its under 100 dollars because it can be bested for less than that price with ease.

Yeah youre right i dont listen for specifics, and i know 300 bux is a lot. If you dont suggest that, then what do you? The reason I like Bose is because of the docking feature that charges it and comes with a remote.

yea bose is good cause of the remote, charger and i think the quality is kick ###.

I agree that the remove while it's docked would be a nice benefit. I actually like my little On-Stage by JBL (though I know the sound isn't the best).

It docks great in it, charges and can sync. The downside is no remote for it and no battery feature.

I think bose is good enough, it plays like a great stereo. I dont need dvd quality or like surround sound its just a ####ing ipod. lol

All Im saying is that I have heard dozens of ipod and multimedia solutions, and the sounddock comes out dead last for value. Many 50 dollar pc speakers can top its sound quality. Yes its just an ipod and I would not connect it to my 5000 dollar stereo system, but then again, if you're gonna spend 300 bucks, you may want to get your moneys worth right? If you want a good ipod system with a docking feature and an even better remote, go for the iFi. If you can afford the sounddock than the iFi is within reach and its about 100 times better.

Monitor Audio's i-deck is so much better than the Bose SoundDock and they cost the same. The i-deck can replace your home stereo, the SoundDock can't.

The answer to the initial question of if a 5g will work in the sound dock is: Yes!
I own one and it works/sounds great.
My advice to you is to buy one (off ebay for much cheaper) and try it for yourself. I'm positive you'll be thrilled with the quality. I use mine in the kitchen while cooking.
This past summer I used it outside at a pary I had and recieved compliments all night long.

At least do yourself a favor and check out the Altec Lansing iM7. It's cheaper, sounds better (both subjectively and objectively), has a line in, is portable, and has the ability to run from batteries. The Bose unit can do none of these things.

http://www.alteclansing.com/product_details.asp?pID=IM7

I shopped for this type of unit, and it came down to the Bose or the iM7. I'm very, very glad I went the route I did.

I would assume that a video iPod would fit in the iM7. It has an adjustable cradle to compensate for thickness. You may want to check out Altec Lansing's web site, though, to confirm.

The remote has power on/off, volume, treble and bass controls, play/pause, and track forward/back. It cannot control the iPod menu system, but then again, why would you want to since you can't see the screen from farther than a foot away?

One feature that I think is somewhat overlooked is the line in. It allows you to connect the unit not only to any other portable device that doesn't have a dock connector (CD player, 1st gen iPod, etc.) but also to things like a laptop. It's been great to have internet radio streaming through the iM7 using only the cable that comes with the iM7 and the laptop, of course.

I don't think it's a bad decision that iLounge named the iM7 the best speaker system of 2005. I've certainly been happy.

And as for the reports of scratched screens, I really can't comment. My iPod was so scratched before I even got the iM7 that I don't know what was caused by the iM7 and what was there before. I haven't, though, noticed any obvious scratching caused by the unit.

either the iDeck or the iFi.

the video fits in the ifi for sure, but im guessing both will work.
iDeck may be hard to get in teh states.

The iM7 is no where near these two.

Who did you hear that from, an expert, first hand? Im an expert and im now telling you first hand, NO!

Michael319, I dont know how to make this any clearer, did you read that URL I posted about bose? I work with high end audio and believe me, I have tested everything for the PC that holds even a modest amount of credibility. the sounddock has horrible value and like I said, you can have better speakers for 50 bucks RETAIL! You do realize the bose sounddock is not even a stereo, nor is any one piece unite for that matter.

Here is a tip about reviews. Look for the ones that actually compare two systems and look for the ones that are done by people with audio experience. In other words, dont read reviews about a speaker system from a computer magazine, and dont read reviews that simply review the object at hand. The whole point about value is entirely relative to what ever else is out on the market.

Im not going to lie, I think the sounddock is junk and yes I have heard it numerous times - I sell it at our store, but I have habit of talking anyone out of it because all I do it show the any other system for 1/ 2 its price and they are sold.

iPod all-in one systems I would recommend

Monitor Audio i-Deck
Klispch iGroove

iPod Portable systems I would recommend

Altec iM7
Klispch iJam (not out yet, but will best the iM7 with its 4.5 midrange woofers)

iPod speaker systems I would recommend (only one)

Klipsch iFi

Speaker systems I would recommend (note: these do not have an iPod dock, audio is achieved via line in)

Altec MX5021
Klipsch 2.1
Klipsch 2.0
Swans M-200
Cambridge Soundworks (pretty much anything they sell over 150 bucks)

# 27 Re: Bose sound dock?
I have no idea what works wiht the ipod video, you'll have to goto an apple store and ask.

the only ipod system that has "great" sound with a remote is the iFi or the iDock.

I would suggest just demo'ing the iFi at an apple store or at Compusa or bestbuy. It will not disappoint. Just make sure its hooked up to a quality mp3. You can turn the volume up to 100% with no issues, just make sure the bass is set at neutral (center)

the only big issue with the ifi is the battery in the remote will probaly be doa. new ones are about 2 bucks.

# 28 Re: Bose sound dock?
I apologize, but it appears that you are correct. One of my colleagues has an iPod Video and we tested this here on a SoundDock unit. The fast-forwarding feature does not work with the remote, but it appears that it does work when you try to fast-forward on the iPod unit itself. It appears that Apple has changed how this functionality works with the new video iPod. It does not appear that there is a workaround to this issue, but I have brought this issue to the attention of our Engineering department. We cannot say if or when a resolution will be developed. If you need to access the fast-forwarding feature, this will need to be done on the iPod unit itself at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please let us know if you need further assistance.

I've got the 5G 60GB and the IM7. I'm very happy with the sound of the IM7. In all reviews I've read, some say the Sound Dock by very small margin and some say the IM7 sounds better by a very small margin. However, with the IM7 remote, I can adjust both the bass and treble seperately and dial in the sound that I like. Also, the 5G fits perfectly on about the 5th click of the size adjuster.
