Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
I've heard a lot of people on here worrying about applying an Invisible Shield to their nano (or anything else) because of the water involved in application.
I also have seen a bunch of people that have bought an invisible shield...
My question is this... for all those that have bought an invisible shield, has ANYONE experienced any issues with the water making their iPod not work? I've had one on my iPod mini forever, and I love the thing, and it's worked fine with the shield on. I'm just wondering if everyone's fears are well-founded or not.
# 1 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
I'm becoming a bigger and bigger fan of these things the more I use my nano. I haven't had any troubles with wetting the surfaces when applying it, but I would be sure to let it dry for about 24 hours (more if it's cold or damp where you are) before really using it. When I used mine within about 8 hours, the clickwheel seemed to have a mind of its own. This was probably due to the drying adhesive.

I put mine on yesterday and love it. I absolutely dont have to worry about any scartches ever, or taking it in and out of cases, also so thin you can still put it in cases if you want.
For the water part, I have no problems at all , you are only going to wet the sides of the shield, so the ipod wont get thta much water on it,
and it can easily take water on it no problem at all.

only wet the sides? i had read that you wet the entire sheet, or more specifically, the entire front of the ipod
edit: here's the application instructions:

Yeh by sides, I mean the front and back of it,
I did wet the front nad back of the sheet, and the excess water gets squeezed out, water will not affect it.
# 5 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
I've also purchased an invisible shield, and as I await my shipment, I'm curious exactly if you need soap or just water or both, and if you have to drain the water from the inside, or just let it dry >.<
I read the instructions on the link gouged provided us (thx man!), but it doesn't show exactly how to do it precisely. Will it be provided as instructions when the delivery arrives?

but wont the water leak into the crevasses, like around the clickwheel?
so.. isnt that risky...?
argh..

That's exactly why I started this thread, to see if that "risky" potential had actually materialized for anyone. So far, it looks like it's 100% safe, if judged by results. That is to say, I haven't seen anyone report that the water on their invisible shield ruined their iPod.
# 8 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
has anyone ever tried removing the invisible shield.. and any issues with that?

# 9 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
With mine I did have a problem after the shield was installed. For some reason the Pod would occasionally change the "repeat" setting from no repeat to repeat all. I'd go in, change it back, and a day or so later it would have spontenously reset that setting. This happened the day after the shield was put on, and had never occured before that. So, while I have no proof, I have always suspected that it was due to the shield and the amount of water that was applied (which was considerable).
# 10 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
That sounds a lot more like a firmware problem (to me) than a hardware issue (which would be caused by water?).
I too am curious as to if anyone has tried to remove it yet. I'm likely going to get a nano (if something better doesn't come out this november), and the invisiblesheild looks pretty attractive right now. I'd just want to make sure that if I put it on, it would be easy enough to get back off without any damage/sticky stuff left behind.

I'm on my second shield on my Mini... no fault of the shield, I was goofing around with it and screwed up the first one (jabbed it with a mechanical pencil... good news - didn't hurt the ipod at all, but put some good dings in the shield, so I had them replace it... for free, I might add.) When I pulled the shield up I was amazed at the virtual lack of any type of residue or anything else left on it. There was no sign anything had ever been there (except the lack of scratches, of course! :) ). Also, on my current shield I pulled the shield off the clickwheel part, and it too left nothing behind. Not even a moist feeling from the water or anything else.

No. The water that is needed to put this on is not that much. What i did was dip the whole sheet i nthe water at once. Then i lightly shook the sheet to shake off excess water, then I put it on the iPod.
After it's on you just have to shift it a few times to line it up. You then squeeze out more of the water.
The water dones not stay on the iPod long dont worry about it. yes I used soap in the water just a little bit (like a drop).

All of your positive comments are very encouraging however the thought of water even touching an electronic device I paid $250 for scares me to death!

# 14 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
I used water to put my screen protector (not invisible shield but the same helicopter blade stuff) and it was just fine. Like someone posted already I just dipped the whole thing in the soapy water and shook it off. Then I laid it on the Nano and squeegeed the excess water out with a credit card. I made sure to soak up the water I was squeegeeing out around the sides with a napkin before it had a chance to run down the sides. Then I let it dry for probably 10 hours before I turned it on. Works and looks great.

Looks like a good buy to me but what makes 2 sheets worth 20$?Did u guys find some where cheaper to buy it or did u just get it off theinvisbleshield.com?
# 16 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
This is exactly what I was afraid of -- this link is from the apple forums. Scary reading.

# 17 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Well that's the first person I've heard of with problems. There's no telling how much water they used. On top of that they didn't use the hold switch when applying it and they also were using it within three hours of application. They were almost asking for it. If they're smart they'll just pull off the IS and return it.
# 18 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Do you guys use your bare hands (obviously properly hand washed before applying the shield)? I'm curious to know if fingerprints will be left on the shield while applying it. Should I consider using laboratory gloves while applying it to eliminate marks that may be left out?
# 19 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
As I said earlier, the CEO of Invisible Shield applied mine to my 20 gig Pod and did not wash his hands at all -- nor did he wipe off the player. Honestly, given the texture of the material, you won't notice that your Ipod has not been cleaned, or that your fingertips were on the material.
The thing that needs saying is this: the invisible shield is not invisible. It is textured, and as such, it will obscure marks, fingerprints, and other flaws. Unfortunately, it also somewhat obscures the screen as well.
# 20 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Washing your hands would be a good idea. Skip the gloves. The trick is to have a little water on your finger tips. You don't need very much water at all for the whole process. Just enough so your fingers don't stick to the adhesive and the film doesn't imediaetly stickt to the screen.
I personally don't think the screen is obscured enough to mention.

Could be I got sensitized to the pixellation by the CEO himself, as he brought it up before he sold it to me!

It's possible for whatever reason that it's more visible on the B&W iPod. If I remember correctly, that's what you have?
# 23 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Well actually I found the reverse to be true. The CEO showed me what he called "pixellation" on color Ipods -- I disliked it, but decided it might be ok on my B&W one and had him install the shield on it. That night I decided I wouldn't want one on a color screen and went back to Macworld to return the one I had purchased for the color Ipod. While there, I double checked what the shield looked like on the color Ipods he had on display and I decided again that the pixellation effect was too noticeable for me on a color screen.
# 24 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
I just installed the invisible shield on my nano yesterday, and like mentioned in the Rainy day review, I frankly dont see any pixellation due to the shield (note that you can see the pixellation in the original LCD itself if you look carefully). Also, the rainbow effect is not much of an issue.
Anyway, I am happy to use the shield for my nano.
# 25 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Oh, and I forgot to mention about the water 'hazard'. I am an Electrical Engineer, and know that most of today's electronics can take quite a battering. A little water is not an issue, especially if the case is there between the PCB and the water.
# 26 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Can you put that shield on the screen too?

# 29 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Just what kind of soap should I be mixing water with for dipping the shield in? I don't usually have soap around in my college dorm, and the closest thing I know to soap is windex. Call me stupid, but I need a specific product name. Please help me out here.
# 30 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
You can try something mild like J&J Baby shampoo. You should be able to get a small bottle of it at the corner store.
I mixed a dime size drop of dish soap in a 9oz cup of watter. I then poured the water in a deep plate, put the skin (still on the liner) in the plate and peeled the liner off. Worked great!

You can get hand soap for ~$1 at any grocery store (and I strongly suggest its use for personal hygiene too)
# 33 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
after installing the shield on a black nano, looked like everything went well...
This morning, i found exactly 1 spec of dust. What should i do? Peel off partially and eliminate the spec, or just remove the whole thing and start over?
# 34 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
If you try to peel it off it will probably stretch.
# 35 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Is it just me, or is the back shield nigh-impossible to apply on the nano? I'm having a freakin hard time trying to get it to fit, and getting the corners to stay put, and curving them without leaving air bubbles by the edges, ugh. Any tips?
# 36 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
You've probably got it by now but...
When you put the back on, line it up so the back looks centered. Then walk away for about 10 minutes. When you come back some of the water will have evaporated, making the side flaps sticky again and easier to fold over.
# 37 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
Same thing here. I got so fed up with the back piece that I just cut off the side extensions, in order to be the same as the front piece. It's not as pretty as the front and doesn't cover as much as it should, but damn it, at least it goes on :(

I sorta got it now, before I read your post, by letting the back dry up for a couple of minutes before I resume the sides that got stickier due to the water evaporating. Although the attempt wasn't the best, I decided to keep it that way. Is it safe to take it back out and reapply it? Its quite solid stuck now, I'm afraid I might stretch it trying to take it off. Do I damp it again, or I just peel it slowly?
The sides seem to be ok now, but the back looks like it caught some scratches (the inside of the shield, not the nano), and those scratches are also on the corner of my front screen (THE IS, not the nano, and that's on the inside) Dang it! I thought it was scratch proof! Maybe it's the outside that scratch proof, the sticky part is scratch prone. I dunno how the inside of the IS got scratched, maybe I pushed with the credit card a little too hard. I dunno...
# 39 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
I've peeled one off the back. For what ever reason it stick REAL well to the metal back. It stretched it out pretty good.
If there is still a little residual water under the back film it may come off unharmed. If it's dried though you'll probably stretch it out something good.
I've applied 3 on the front and 2 on the back now so I've gotten pretty good at it.
# 40 Re: Invisible Shield Water Difficulties??
I emailed and left Invisible Shield a message asking for an exchange and haven't recieved any replies yet! If I don't get a reply by tomorrow, I'm calling Citibank for a charge back.
