Bass response is great. A lot better than the iPod and iPod Mini. I had the EQ off and the bass was still pretty good.

What about comparing to your shuffle? Was it as great? or is the nana still inferior?
ipod shuffle is known to be rich in the bass area

Without the EQ it's a bit inferior to the bass response of the iPod Shuffle.

Don't get all worked up. You can barely notice it. Is it on the iPod Shuffle level as far as bass response? Not quite, but pretty darn close.

Bass response, and sound in general, of the nano is cleaner than the shuffle.
# 8 Re: For those who got the Nano already, is the bass response as good as the shuffle?
All in all, they probably have the same general improvement over the other iPods (push-pull output instead of the single-ended, capacitor-coupled output.) So while they may not sound exactly the same, I bet they are in the same group (and the other iPods in a different group.)

hmm.. ok, that sounds more reassuring... ok, i'm convinced (again) :D

The Mini and the Nano are almost identicle...which is disappointing to me. Hence the reason I'm going back to my trusty iAudio U2 2gb which pretty much dominates any other player I've throw at it in the last two years.

Okay, now we have some completely contradictory replies!
# 12 Re: For those who got the Nano already, is the bass response as good as the shuffle?
Ok, after reading all these threads, I decided to get a 4GB iPod nano
After 2 Hrs of testing w/ various songs, I wanna conclude that:
YES!! The base response is a big improvement over the iPod mini and 3G/4G iPods! I'm soooooo glad that this happened!
I was worried that the bass response will be as xxxx as the iPod mini after owning an iPod shuffle
Now I can officially declare that the iPod nano's base response is close to the shuffles, and is much much much better than other iPods (I've tested w/ various Technos, Trance, etc.)
**Note that i have the EQ set to off for all testings **

The Nano's bass is far superior to my 3rd and 4th gen iPods. The sound overall is a big improvement.
The NANO may be the biggest/fastest selling consumer electronic product in history. The public is gonna go nuts for these things.

i'm impressed with the Nano's bass response and the overall sound quality. it is better than my 1g mini and 512 mb shuffle in my opinion. i was very surprised how good it sounded even with the eq off. i couldn't handle turning my eq off with my mini. looks like i'm gonna have to recharge my battery less frequently.

I tried a nano for a couple of minutes at an Apple store. It sounded very close to the Shuffle to me, which is great! :) The litmus test is that it even sounds good with the regular Apple buds- ;)

Bass response IMO is better than the Shuffle. And if you want to add more bass, use the EQ.
