Is the iBook a good first?
Is the iBook 12'' a good first mac, and also a good first laptop?
I am seriously considering picking one up either in July or August.
I am pretty good with a PC and have always wanted a laptop (keep in mind I'm turning 15 so I cant afford a $2000 Mac) and I love the quality of Apple and really want to give a Mac a testing. We already have the HP Desktop for the whole family that Im typing on now, and that can handle pretty much all my major needs that a laptop cant do. I hear that Apple is switching to Intel Chips and I really think IBM is better because the apple brand is not the same everyday PC with a Pentium processor running windows. But a different platform all together. I have a wireless G network in my house already and would connect wirelessly (sp?) anyway. I really cant afford anything higher than a 12'' iBook G4 so please no suggestions on a Powerbook, Id like to, but I dont want to spend that much. So what do the Mac users suggest to me, help me out guys:) Thanks for the help, Im getting tired now, been looking at iBook reviews:rolleyes: Im going crash, later guys.

Well I got my first Mac about 5 months ago and it was a G4 12" iBook, I still only have the standard 256MB RAM in it, but I can still go on Photoshop without any problem, I bought Microsoft Office that ran a treat, and so much better then the Windows version may I add.
As a first Mac the iBook is great, you get everything you need, though you may want to up the RAM. :D

No worries about the G4 chips. Apple will support them for some time yet. Still, if you can wait, you might want to (and continue to save) since the lowerend "Mactels" will be out early next year. Performance wise, Apple claims that the Intel will do a better job. How much of that and how much of marketing hoola, we won't know--yet.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help, I am hoping to be able to afford it by August, Dont know yet though. If I can, I will get an older model (non intel) If it's not to much of a price difference between the 2. With the Intel chip and everything it's kinda like a basic $600 dell laptop except the fact it runs a mac OS instead of windows. But the internals are pretty much the same, you know what I mean though, I dont want the same old cheaply made dell or hp laptop. I like Apple's higher end quality that you wont get in an HP. I just dont want the quality they've had, to change when the switch to a very common Pentium processor.
i mean I wouldnt have a problem having a dell or hp, but I think Apple is the way to go for me, I've been very impressed in the quality of Apples products and it's hard for me to buy a laptop every year or two (money wise) so I would like to get the best in a Mac I can get at a low price, such as an iBook. Oh and I also get a student discount so the iBook I get will probably be $899 instead of $999.

Get 512 ram. If your good with computers, then install it yourself. If your not, buy it for 75 bucks extra. 512 is a must. Other than that, the ibook is pretty good. Good battery life. Acceptable weight. Nice looks. And also a mac, which is what you want. Heck, they even have a video card(outdated though).

I like my iBook... in fact right now I'm in a coffee shop in London and it still draws looks despite being old and decrepit... the iBook that is.. not me! lol
It's tough (this one's been to bits three times), it runs panther fairly well and is as robust as the latest models if quite a bit slower. As a first laptop I can highly recommend... better looks, form factor and OS (if not speed) than an equally priced Dell IMHO...

Yea, Im pretty decent with computers, but my uncle also builds all of his computers, so I could get help from him if I needed it. I could install extra ram without a problem.

The manual comes with a guide. Keep in mind that the iBook has only 2 RAM slots, so buy as much as you can unless you want to throw away when you upgrade...
Man, looking at those 1.2 and 1.33 Ghz G4 processers makes me jealous and want more than my 1.07Ghz POS :( Ah well, at least its still a Mac :)

What do you mean its better? They are nearly the exact same accept the mac version hasn't been as updated as much as the windows version.

The Mac version has some features that the Wintel version doesn't (i.e: Project Centre)...

The mac version is updated just as frequently, and it also has a newer version then the PC version.
Office started on the mac.

Actually, Office 2003 is the PC version, the Mac version is Office 2004 ( http://www.microsoft.com/mac/) The Mac version prior to 2004 was called Office X.
