Buying a Mac with the Intel Changes
Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hey guys.
I'm just going to get right to the point here. I want to buy a Mac soon. I'm not sure which one, but that's a totally different subject. Anyway, my question is with all these impending Intel changes, is it safe to buy a PowerPC based Mac? Will the software eventually not work on PowerPC Macs? Should I wait for the Intels? Why or why not?
Thanks for your advice! :)

The only reason I can forsee waiting for an Intel is maybe better "performance per watts" and a potential drop in price.
But yes, it is safe to buy a PowerPC Mac (however, go for a G5), Apple will still support the PowerPC. And Apple has updated Xcode 2.1 which allows developers to write universal binary code, which will work on both Intel & PowerPC chips.
If you buy a Mac now, rest assured that 95% of apps released within the next 3-4 years will work on PPC.

From what Jobs said, the power pc line will be supported well into the future. So, it is safe to buy the mac now. The only advantages for waiting would be if you were planning on buying a powerbook. Other than that, the Pentium 4 doesn't offer THAT much performance over the g5 ppc processors.

I won't give you same answer I gave you elsewhere.
The short version is Yes.

Well, the transition ain't gonna happen until 2006-2007, so I'd buy now...
If anything, you can keep it and sell it as an antique in a few years
