Favourite Guitarist
Mine would either be Jimi Hendrix or Justin Hawkings (The Darkness).
# 1 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Well I think Jimi is definately up there in the top ten...so who is 'The Darkness'? Any links to samples?
Pink Floyd, Steely Dan and of course Van Halen (NOT HAGAR) have some of my favorite string sounds.
If you like them check out the 'Outlaws', hint: They're also know as 'The Florida Guitar Army'
# 2 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I love Van Halen too! Like you, I feel Dave Lee Roth is so much better!
The Darkness, erm, they are an English band, who are glam/#### rock. If you like Van Halen you would probably like them.
Check out this site: http://www.thedarknessrock.com for more info on them. There are also free music videos there and free audio samples.
# 3 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I could not narrow it down to one, but my top 5 are as follows..
1. Michael Sweet & Oz Fox of Stryper
2. Steve Vai
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Stevie Ray Vaughn
5. Eric Johnson
# 4 Re: Favourite Guitarist
2 people have said the group Van Halen but neither of them named the guitarist, Eddie Van Halen, who I feel is one of the greatest guitarists ever. It's hard to compare him to Jimi Hendrix though since they're from different generations.
# 5 Re: Favourite Guitarist
there is no better axe man than steve vai. one listen to his music and you sit in wonder about how the heck he does that with a guitar. hes amazing.
# 6 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Slash

I am just glad no one has said Jack white yet, he is so over rated.

Jack White.

# 10 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Jimmy Page, without a doubt.
-Dan
# 11 Re: Favourite Guitarist
OK, I didn't name the guitarist before, just the band...
So how about BOTH: SANTANA
as in Carlos. Maybe not the best ever but pretty dam good and still is. Talent as a player and song/music writer, not too shabby.
# 12 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Has no1 here heard of John Frusciante? He's the guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anyway here's my top 3:
1. Hendrix
2. John Frusciante
3. Carlos Santana
# 13 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Clapton, for their sound, rather than their technical skill.
Steve Vai & Joe Satriani for technical skill.
# 14 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Hendrix is the best. Tony Rice is another of my favorites.
# 15 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton (I'm suprised no-one said Eric Clapton yet-- maybe not many people like Classic Rock here)
# 16 Re: Favourite Guitarist
You are not the first to mention Clapton. Classic Rock is very popular here.
# 17 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Indeedi! I am a big fan of classic rock, but I would feel Eric Clapton with CREAM tend to fall under the Classic Rock genre, not by himself.
# 18 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Without a doubt, the two best, at least in my opinion, guitarists of all time...
# 19 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Cream. Spencer Davis Group, John Mayall Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominoes were Classic too! I know I'm forgetting some groups he was in... Some of his stuff is blues straight up, but once a classic, always classic in my mind. If it can be called rock and it's Clapton, it's Classic Rock. 461 Ocean blvd. Slowhand, Journeyman etc., etc. Some of his latest work might break out of the rock category, then it can't be classic rock, sure.
# 20 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Clapton does not consider himself an equal to Hubert Sumlin, Howlin' Wolf's guitarist. Many don't realize that Wolf was also an incredible guitar player himself, but he preferred to employ a great guitarist and sing/blow harp.
# 21 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Zakk Wylde. I saw him in concert many years ago with Ozzy. He has only gotten better since then.
check out his band
Black Label Society
# 22 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Junior Brown
# 23 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Duane Allman
# 24 Re: Favourite Guitarist
1.) Hendrix
2.) Jimmy Page
after that, no order-Angus Young, SRV, Ummmm-noone mention Malmsteen yet?
# 25 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Jimi Hendrix
Tom Scholz
Neil Schon
Steve Lukather
Mark Knopfler
Steve Howe
Most over-rated: Eddie Van Halen (all flash, no feeling)
Galley at 2007-11-15 17:52:42 >

# 26 Re: Favourite Guitarist
For me Slash probably because I have seen him live.
Keith Urban is also a great guitarist although obviously not up with the likes being mentioned on this thread. I remember seeing him when he was a nothing ... and he jumped on our table and let that guitar rip. He was awesome.
# 27 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Page. Page. Page.
# 28 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I am glad we are talking about FAVOURITE guitarist and not BEST.
My most listened to would have to be:
Ed Wynne (Ozric Tentacles)
Steve Vai
Hendrix
Jimmy Page
# 29 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Top five in my book (not in any perticular order)
5. Eddie Van Halen
4. Eric Clapton
3. Ace Frehley
2. Yngwie Malmsteen
1. Angus Young

Hillel Slovak (original RHCP), Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck (Has no one said him yet?), Jimmy Page, and because of my undying love for RHCP, John Frusciante.

# 34 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Lots of great lead players mentioned so far - but you can't forget the rhythm side, either. Staying in the classic rock vein mentioned by many others, I'd throw in votes for Pete Townshend and Keith Richards.
# 35 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Keith Richards...
# 36 Re: Favourite Guitarist
If you're going to mention the rythm side of it, then I would say Malcolm Young (AC/DC). A really great rythm guitarist.
# 37 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Definitely Slash.
# 38 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Jeff Beck
Al DiMeola
John Petrucci
and much more, of course.
moonty at 2007-11-15 18:05:53 >

# 39 Re: Favourite Guitarist
In no particular order...
Clapton
Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick)
Brian May (Queen)
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Pete Townshend
Freddie King
While I respect both Hendrix and Page, I'm not a huge fan of either.
# 40 Re: Favourite Guitarist
How can you mention Guitar...and not mention PRINCE...I mean...come on people! Pat Matheny is great...if you are jazz fan.
# 41 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I gotta agree with kid. I don't care for his tone, but Prince does have some skills!
# 42 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Have to be Steve Vai, Marty Friedman (Megadeth), Steve Howe (Yes) and John Petrucci (Dream Theatre).
# 43 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Yngwie J. Malmsteen
John Frusciante
Alexi Laiho
# 44 Re: Favourite Guitarist
didn't see a whole lot of him till the end of the posts, but imoa, Page. I also like Slash, Fruscianti (or however you spell it), Hendrix (duh) and George Haarrison (Beatles and post-beatles)
# 45 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Hmm. Maybe Brian May from Queen.
Sadako at 2007-11-15 18:12:54 >

# 46 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I havent seen YNGWIE J. MALMSTEEN mentioned so much! He's frickin awesome! However, the best ever has to be JIMI HENDRIX. Totally amazing!
# 47 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson, hands down.
# 48 Re: Favourite Guitarist
i can't pick a favourite (well apart from 2 who just stand above the rest), there's so many i love...here's a small selection:
zakk wylde...this guy is the hendrix of our generation, he's unbelievable
dimebag darrel RIP you insane mutha******
randy rhoads...RIP to one of the best guitarists i've ever seen
tony iommi...invented heavy metal...'nuff said
slash...this guys just my idol, he's one of the reasons i took up guitar
ritchie blackmore
kirk hammett, given that metallica is my favourite band by a million country miles, i had to include the heart of the band
eddie van halen...you can hear the influence everywhere...
yngwie malmsteen...hey i mentioned yngwie...incredible, best neo-classical guitarist out there
jerry cantrell...the best grunge guitarist ever. period.
james hetfield...part 1 of the backbone of the greatest band ever...in my eyes no better rhythm guitarist has ever been seen on this planet
btw, the 2 absolute favourites are zakk wylde & slash....one inspired me to take up guitar and the other inspired me to actually take it seriously.

# 49 Re: Favourite Guitarist
How has no one mentioned Pat Metheny....He is a great talent...
# 50 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Here's my vote for Alex Lifeson - Rush!
# 51 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Jimmi Hendrix or Jimmy Page
# 52 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Holy cow, nobody likes Jonny Greenwood? Listened to Glastonbury '97 today. The man is brilliant. For me, it's:
1. Jonny Greenwood
2. Jimmy Page
3. David Gilmour
4. Paul Banks
5. John Frusciante
Yeah, those ones. They're awesome. Favorite Frusciante song is Murderers.
raine at 2007-11-15 18:20:06 >

# 53 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Tie between those two. Carlos Santana, Eddie Van Halen, And Eric Clapton are also great ones.
# 54 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I'm surprised that the name Jerry Garcia hasn't come up yet.
Steve Kimock is my favorite current guitarist. So many guitarists rely on pentatonic scales to do stuff, and sure, it sounds cool, but it all starts sounding the same after a while, imho. Steve, on the other hand, is much more melodic than the vast majority of guitarists, who seem to be pulling out the same bag of tricks.
There's a lot of Steve Kimock Band stuff for free on the Live Music Archive at archive.org.
# 55 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Kurt Cobain
# 56 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I like the Edge from U2 a lot. I think he's really really underrated. I don't know why. Prolly he gets overshadowded by Bonos Huge ego, like all the other guys.
# 57 Re: Favourite Guitarist
1)Joe Satriani
2)Kirk Hammet (taught by Satriani)
3)Stave Vai
4)Hendrix
5)Eric Clapton
# 58 Re: Favourite Guitarist
well said jimmeh. i cant beleve it took that long.
Dimebag darral_pantera(only 1 song i dont like and thats F***ing hostile cuz it sucks)
he would be my greatest guitarist. and the dude from children of bodom alex someone he is crazy in needle24/7

Five stars to Brian May!
# 63 Re: Favourite Guitarist
It's hard to pick one. I love Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine and Jimi Hendrix.
# 64 Re: Favourite Guitarist
Satriaini, Vaughan, Petrucci... all amazing. Malmsteen can play really fast... but I personally can't stand him.
# 65 Re: Favourite Guitarist
I've gotta go with Slash. He kicked ### with Guns 'N' Roses and is still very stellar with Velvet Revolver. Plus we can't forget all his side projects and so forth which have also been done.
# 66 Re: Favourite Guitarist
1. Jimmy Page
2. Jimmy Page
3. Jimmy Page
# 67 Re: Favourite Guitarist
4 pages to finally get Brian "Brain" May listed... I mean, yeah, the others are good, but most are into playing a billion notes a second, but Brian plays with emotion. and consider this, how many of the others actually built their own guitar?

The thread is about your 'favourite' guitarist, so it really doesn't matter how good Kurt Cobain actually was.

The only other true guitarist I like for his string work is SRV. Stevie can just get down with that hearty bluesy guitar that fills you up like a good chilli. :D
