An exclamation point?

Ok, this is probably a really stupid question but I couldn't find the answer to it...so I'm asking.

Nearly half of the music files that iTunes put in the library when I installed it have thing funky gray and white exclamation point next to it in the far left hand column. And, when I go to get the info on these files it tells me I have to manually show it where the source file is. What does the exclamation point mean, and how can I get around having to manually configure the file?

iTunes stores the data of the songs into iTunes Library file (.xml extension). The file location is also stored there. Now, for some reason the location of your files has changed and cannot be found from the location stored in the file. And therefore cannot be played...

It can be that the folder name has changed or the drive letter has changed etc. You can correct this error manually via iTunes as suggested or you can delete the entries from iTunes and import the files&folders again or you can tamper the xml -file: open it to notepad and replace false file path with correct one. The xml -file is located in My Documents > My music > iTunes

Easiest way is probably to delete false entries and then import them again... This way you'll lose playcounts & ratings...

I recommend this program for deleting the missing songs:
itsync dot tripod dot com. (The forum doesn't let me post URL:s)
It can also search for new songs and add them to your iTunes.
