Nah, i'v got a 1G mini. But when i first saw an iPod and decided i wanted one, the 3G's were being advertised everywhere.

I have somewhat the same thing around here. People know I have an Ipod but all they have ever seen around here is the 4G.

I've heard a lot of things like that. My friend's uncle has a 3rd gen and I used to have one. When she was describing her uncle's to me and talking about mine, she called them "old school" iPods even though they were just discontinued last summer. The funny thing is that she didn't know anything about iPods until she got one as a gift about 2 weeks ago.

Same thing happens to me. I don't know anyone who has a 3G - everyone seems to have a 4G - and nobody seems to know about the previous generations of iPod that have existed.

"WOA! Did you get your iPod custom made? What's the battery life on that thing? What, 8 hours by Apple's estimation, 6 hours with practical use? Did you invent the junky battery life yourself? Whatever...where can I buy a 4G?"

(The above is a paraphrase of some typical reactions I've seen from people who have never seen a 3G. As you can see, their reaction is noticeable different from the ones you've been getting.)

I agree it's like the 3G is non-existant for many iPod users. I was listening to mine during break at work one day and one guy was like "what? that's an iPod?" (he had a 4G). I said yes and I turned on the backlight and the red buttons got him jealous. Of course I didn't tell him about my 8 hr battery life. :p

Yeah, quite a few people in my school have an iPod, but the only ones that think they are "old school" are the ones with minis or 4th generations... When my 3rd Generation iPod arrives, and people question what it is, I'll tell them its the new 5th generation, and show them the amazing red backlights, and make fun of them for having a click wheel, when all my controls are touch. ;)
Personally, the click-wheel, or "quick-wheel" as I like to call it, is convenient for me, because I don't have to move my thumb, but I personally think the touch-sensitive 3rd generation controls are amazing, although the first time I used one, it was hard getting used to, having to move your thumb off the touch wheel and onto the buttons, I was also surprised that the "select" button was touch sensitive too...

man that's a bummer, they don't know what it is? fourth generations are popular, actually today at my block party they were DJ'ing their own music, using a third generation as their hook up music. i could have stolen it if i wanted, pretty good condition back was a bit scratched, i only have a 30 gigabyte photo so it would be a addition to my alone ipod.

Man, if only the 3G's came in color. I would buy those by the truckload.

I mean, when you think about it, the first-gen had a moving wheel and clicking buttons, then the second-gen had clicking buttons, but a touch-sensitive wheel. The third-gen comes out with all touch-sensitive, no moving parts.

And then, the fourth-gen's come out, and Apple's back to the clicking buttons. WTF happened?

Seriously, the click-wheel sucks. Especially the gray color and the writing. The 3G's will always be my favorite iPods, with the absolutely killer all-white, all-touch sensitive front and the orange-glowing buttons. Ahh...so nice...

i would have to agree on the fact that it looked nice.. but i find the clickwheel easier to operate.

As much as I love Mario and Sidney (yes, I named them), the iPod is becoming the stuff of trend-whores. People buy (or at least did buy) mini's (before they were discountinued) as a fashion statement, and just to be cool. This is why when I listen to Mario anywhere, anyone who I let touch it has no clue how to use it.

Hehehehe. Yeah... I remember when I was at school and my friend rich friend brought his 3g iPod. The first iPod I've ever seen and WOW. He let me play with it all class. I freaking got addicted and changed the song every 5 seconds just to touch the iPod. Now I have a Mini. And got a Aluminum Case so now its a size of a full iPod. Hahahha.

I hope you picked those names for the reason I'm thinking of ;)

But yeah, I was first confused when I saw the 3G, I'll admit it. It was only because I got into the whole iPod craze only a couple years ago. I'm a senior in college now, and not one person I knew had one in my high school. It wasn't a major one, but now I'm at a major university and I see those white earbud cords EVERYWHERE.

Ahh, i've been in that situation. Been in-the-know when it comes to iPods since the 1st generation, but i was at a party a few months back and just couldn't work the 3G hooked up to the speakers... I was completely ####ed, couldn't even stand still (Vodka+orange juice = :D)

when sobre i can work one fine. A friend of mine had one back in the day (last year) but this little ##### kicked him while it was in his pocket: cracked the screen.
Now he's got a 4G.

But i think i've only ever seen 2 3Gs before.

Hah. I should never have bought that Nomad Zen and got a 2G ipod instead - but back then, I was still persuading people not to buy MD's but instead to get an ipod.

Just to throw in another story here, I was at the gym last week and this girl on the bike next to me was holding a 3rd gen. I watched her mess with it like tapping the screen, trying to click the wheel, fooling with the buttons, etc. for a good five minutes. Eventually she turns to me and is like, "Do you know how to work one of these iPods?". Now I know for a fact she has a 4th gen, but about the third gen she said, "I've never seen one of these before." I had to show her how to use it. I just thought it was kinda funny.

Everyone at my school has minis, when I take out my 3gen 15gig they are like "is that a fake iPod?" or "is that the first iPod that came out" "is that the old school iPod" "is that the new iPod with video?" people only know about minis, minis, and minis
