shuffle question regarding changing altering bit rates when transfering songs

hi, ive heard that you can alter the bit rate of all your songs when transfering them from itunes to your shuffle. now all my tunes are approx 200k so if i were to select the option for them to be altered to 128k, will itunes re-record them on to my harddrive at this new bit rate or is it just done all via itunes on the fly with no extra hassle?

It's on the fly and only goes to the shuffle. It leaves your original files intact.Stuart
