Rust build up on connector
My friend and I have found that after a short time with our ipods shuffle rust build up occurs (or orange substance) inside the cap and on the connector that plugs into the USB port. I am assuming that this is causing the ipod not to be recognized when plugged into the USB port. Both ipods are being used during exercise. Mainly wondering if anyone else is having same issues.

Okay purchased shuffle in April, noticed the rust like substance in May, posted the problem in June and now (June 17) the shuffle is out of commission.
Best of luck to all of you shufflers!!!

If it's rust, get it off using something like an emery cloth or very fine grit sandpaper.

Return it or exchange and use the sports cover accessory with the new one. Not sure if warranty covers getting it wet. I would take it the Apple store and tell them it doesn't work. I wouldn't point out the rust or talk about sweating unless they ask.
