Half at 128kbps half not?

What gives?

Just picked up a shuffle (to use while my 40gb is being repaired).

I put some albums on there (surprisingly slow actually) and then went to add a few more, I noticed that I had ripped an album at a really high bitrate so selected the "convert higher bitrate songs" option in iTunes.

So what does iTunes do? It's starts to convert ALL the songs already on the shuffle, like I want to wait ANOTHER 30 mins.

Is it a piece of carp or is there something i'm missing?

It's doing precisely what you tell it to, no?

If you only want to convert 1 album, do this:
Change your importing preferences to 128kbps.
Select the album's songs in your library.
Right-click, and choose "Convert to MP3" or "Convert to AAC", whichever format you've chosen. This will make a new copy of the album in the lower bitrate. Drag this to your shuffle.
By the way... it may be transferring painfully slow because you are using USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0. Purchase a USB 2 PCI card (desktop) or PCMCIA card (laptop) if it bugs you.

Thanks but, err, no.

1) It's not doing what I want it to, I don't want it convert all the songs already on the shuffle, I want to be able to choose, the whole point of the transfer changing the bit rate is so I DON'T have to have 2 copies of each album.

2) I'm USB2, it's just real slow when coverting the bit rates.

Couldn't you just select the convert option and add the few albums that are really high bit rate and then unselect the convert option and fill the rest? Obviously not the best solution, but it should work. (Why do you have just a few at high bit rates anyway?)

As for the speed, yes it is much slower than the hard drive based ones. I get around 2 mb/sec with my Shuffle and 40 gig 4g got around 20 mb/sec. This suprised me too, but flash memory write speeds are slower than hard drive speeds and the Shuffle is even slower than other flash memory. But, with only 512 mb or 1 gig, I don't think it's a big deal.

I completely understand it's not doing what you want, but the option is doing exactly what it claimed to do... that's all.

Ergo, you were missing something, which is all I was pointing out.

It does suck, but I can't see any automatic way of doing what you want... you'll need to choose your evil and use some sort of workaround like the one I posted above... sorry.

Just leave the bit rates alone. Autofill randomly from your favorite playlist and hope you get your real ipod back soon!
