iPod making strange whirring sounds and not starting
hi...
i'm really not sure what's going on with my iPod right now. Two days ago, I plugged it into the wall to start charging it. The apple sign comes up, but then, the iPod starts to make these whirring sounds, as if it cannot start up. Following that, an image of a folder with a caution sign comes up, and then the screen goes back to the apple sign. now, when i try to start it up, it goes to the apple screen and then just shuts off...nothing else. i tried plugging it into my computer, and the computer said an error has occured. can anyone help me with this? what do i do?

If you're not under warranty, you're screwed.
The same thing happened to me, and I don't have another $300-400 laying around, so...
Haha, Apple gives the big middle finger to all of us again! *sighs*

Does anyone know the make and model of HDD used in the iPod? If you're screwed anyway it might be worth opening it up and seeing how hard it is to replace the drive.
Mine has the same problem but is under warranty. If it were not, I'd have a go myself.

if it's under warranty, you can take it to an apple store and they will replace it. same thing happened with my ipod. my hard drive was toast. they gave me a new one right then and there.

but did your ipod have any scratches or cracks on it?
i'm having the exact same problem, but my ipod looks...just horrible.

ARGH! I just logged on for this EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Went to turn my Ipod on this morning, and lo and behold the same issue. File folder and everything. I have no idea what caused this - definately not user error on my end.
I got it as a gift last December - how long are they under warranty?
Guess I'll be braving the mall this evening to hit the Mac store :(

this means that the harddrive has to be replaced. and if you're under warranty you're in luck, take it to the apple store and tell them your situation and they'll get it replaced. if your warranty is expired then too bad you have to either get a new harddrive and install it yourself and open the ipod. or send it to a professional. www.pdasmart.com has some ipod parts.

but what about if the ipod is all banged up??
i've read so many stories here on this forum of ipods not being replaced or fixed because of the ipods condition.
mine just keeps showing the "sad face" icon.
it is still under warranty..

For what it's worth - took my Ipod to the mac store in the mall this weekend.
While I was taking it out of it's case, I DROPPED IT.
NOW IT WORKS.
Of course, the guy at the genius bar tried to tell me it was a software issue, etc...wiped it clean and now I'm in the process of reloading all my music (since it's no longer on my computer).
Oy.
