Cant Update

Whenever I plug in my iPod (20GB- 4th gen i think) an error message in the bottom right of my screen (in the tray) appears, telling me:

"The file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes\Play counts is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility."

I used chkdsk, but the problem continues to pop up. This means I can't update my iPod, and it's driving me nuts!

Can anyone help, or suggest anything?

Anyone? Even a suggestion of how to go about diagnosing the problem?

You could try to restore you ipod using the ipod updater. It will erase all of the music on your ipod. I think that is the only way to correct the problem.

How do I do that?

Davus--to restore just run the updater software from Apple while your iPod is connected to your computer. You can use the disk you got with your iPod, or you can download the latest version from Apple, to make sure you get the latest version of the iPod firmware.

When the software gives you to option to "update" or "restore" just choose restore. But as Nickster said--it will erase everything on your iPod. If you have your iPod set to auto sync, this isn't a problem. Just sync your iPod with your comptuer when you're finished running the restore routine.

Hope this helps-

Will it remove everything from my iTunes?

No--

Restoring will just delete the songs from your iPod. Any songs that are on your computer in iTunes will remain there.
