I painted my iPod...Take a look
I painted my iPod yesterday, and I think it came out OK. I need to do a few more touches to clean it up a bit, but here are the pics...
I used Plasti-Kote Kameleon Kolor, and it changes color from blue to green to purple depending on the angle and light.
First I sanded it down using 400 grit, then did one thin coat of black primer, two coats of the blue/green, then removed the tape from the screen and clear coated over it. The clear coat gave a smooth feeling over the edges, but along the click wheel where I left it taped there are rough edges.
Overall it came out OK, and the only things that are wrong are because I screwed up: scratches on the screen, and a scratch in the paint (from a bug that landed there while it was drying), and the edges of the click wheel are kinda rough because I can't cut a perfect circle.

Wow, looks nice except for the click wheel. how much money does that paint and primer cost. i was wondering if you could do me a huge favor and post or pm me the materials and links to the websites where they can be found. i'd love to do this to my 4g as soon as i get a 5g

Wow... That must have been a huge pain to paint!
Congrats!

I got the paint from Pep Boys, and thats the only place I've seen it.
It is called Plasti-Kote Kustom Effex Kameleon Kolor, and it is an automotive paint.
It comes in 3 stages:
1. Base Kote $3.99
2. Kameleon Kolor $7.99
3. Klear Kote $3.99
The hardest part is masking everything off, but now I realize thats the most important part. This was actually really easy, if you go slow.

honestly i don't really think this person was serious about this. i wouldn't even believe that he thinks it looks nice.
# 6 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
Who are you to criticize? You try and do that, I want to see you try just so I can shoot you down when you do a much worse job than what mudfish did. The paint job is excellent for a home job, aside from whats on the click wheel, and that can be taken off with just a simple guitar pick.

I agree with Dismal, you don't have to criticize his job.. YOU think it doesn't look right but WE don't think it doesn't look right, so to say that you "don't think that person was serious about it" is pretty ####### for someone who didn't even tryed it.
Other than that, I don't understand why you guys don't remove the front of the iPod before painting it, first you don't need to mask anything and you don't have a white square on the interior of the screen, anyway great job!
# 8 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
ok, that looks horrible, i'm sorry. why would you EVER try and PAINT your ipod?

I agree it's a good job. Did you tape off the metal and the click wheel? It looks very clean on the edge of the metal.

yea, i mean if you want my opionon, i personally don't like it. Maybe its the color but there is just something i don't like about it.
BUT!, i do congratulate you on doin it yourself. You took the time and effort and saved you some money so good job.
hope to see other stuff from ya

Dasnub, has anyone ever told you that you're a moron?
Like I said before, you try it, then criticize.

Seriously... deciding to paint your iPod is... a pretty drastic decision. Especially with the number of non-permanent options to change the look of your iPod, such as printable stickers and so on.
While I do admire the OP's guts and effort in doing it, and the job he did on it (except the clickwheel, as many have mentioned)... just because there is someone who thinks that a iridescently painted iPod which looks so-so compared to the original clean lines of the iPod as designed, doesn't make them a moron, just someone with a different aesthetic.
Yeah, I understand the "try it yourself" rationale if the poster liked the look of a painted iPod and was just criticizing the job done... but I think Dasnub just doesn't like the look of a painted iPod. That hardly makes him a moron.
And if the argument is that I have to try painting my iPod before I can comment on the aesthetic look of one painted iridescent green... well, I guess that I'll just have to keep my mouth shut, since the day I have the desire or will to take a paintbrush to my iPod will be a frigid day in Hades.

I'm guessing I might have to wait with you dharmabum420 for that frigid day in Hades. I would not dare touch my ipod with a paintbrush. I can't even draw a cat !! Seriously not even a cat !!
I must say you are brave to attempt it mudfish and if you are happy then that's what really matters. I prefer personally the clean crisp white (so unindividual I know) ... so I will just have to wait for Apple to bring out nice colours other than white or U2.
I am thinking about a big tatoo for the back though. I am just not sure whether to trust my local engravers ...
# 15 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
I knew I would get criticism, and it doesn't bother me. I wanted to do something original, and I painted my iPod to match the color of my new car (Blue/Green Crystal metallic Grand Prix- pics in my profile). I don't think it came out as good as I had imaginged, but I am still happy with the results.
On a side note, if I paid full price for my iPod I would not have done this, but I got through other means, which I will not mention, so nothing lost in the long run.
Would I reccommend this to others...not the way I did it, maybe if you took off the cover and did it a litttle more slowly, but hey someone has to be the first to try it so everyone can learn from my mistakes.
# 16 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
hey mudfish did you take the cover off or did you mask it? you masked it right? Can you take off the cover and just paint it like that or are the components stuck to the cover? I know the back plate comes off but will the components come off the front too?
# 17 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
I don't know about the cover I tried to take it off, but didn't want to damage anything. In hindsite it would be alot easier with the cover off.
# 18 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
white matches everything. plus its so pretty. plus you are obviously very inexperienced with spraypaint. hopefully if anyone ever tries this again they will do a little bit of sanding and spend more time masking off the screen and wheel. it not that im making fun of it. its just that even i would have a hard time taking an already beautiful and quite expensive device and painting it up without really prepping it well.
# 19 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
In my defense, the reason I used moron in place of anything else, was because of the other posts he's made and his sig.
I don't know, people I know who say things like that (Signature) generally aren't the most intelligent.

looks spot on apart from around the clickwheels and lcd. why dont you open the ipod (warrentys gone now anyway...) and remove the clickwheel and if it can be done on the new ipods, the lcd cover for a smoother finish round those areas...

Wrap some duck tape around it and you can use that as a arm band holder................
or better yet...
Drill a hole in each corner and run a couple of quick ties through then and you have a belt holder.....
I'am sure we can think of several other ways to mess it up some more..
# 24 Re: I painted my iPod...Take a look
I like the way you masked around the click wheel......It's so much nicer now that it's no longer round like all the other Ipods. Makes it stand out ........
I feel sorry for the bug that got trapped...I hope he likes your music......
