40 gigabyte

I checked with technicians at Anapod, and they indicated that if any of the ipods (including the 40gig) appeared as a separate drive on my Windows 98se machine or any other computer, the software would work. If I were to get a 40 gigabyte ipod, would all of the previously noted techiniques (ie browsing for updater, etc.) allow it to work on a windows 98se machine? It looks like the older forum listings were not made using the newer ipods. Has anyone used the newest ipods on Windows 98se machines successfully? I really don't care about Itunes, but wish only to categorize songs for listening/use the voice recorder.

Thanks, so

The only problem you're going to have is getting the iPod formatted for windows. To do that you need to Restore the iPod w/the Updater program, which is only available from Apple and the installer will only work w/XP or 2K.

So, you could get the file from a friend who has XP you just need the Updater.exe file. It will run on your 98SE machine, but you can extract it from the installer (the setup.exe) that's the problem. But if you have someone that has XP or 2K, have them install it on their machine, then copy the updater.exe file (c:\program files\iPod\) to your 98SE machine and run it.

Then you can use Anapod, MC9 (my recommendation) or any of the other software apps to sync with.

Appreciate the reply; does a CD containing the Updater.exe file/installer (the setup.exe) come in the package with each new 30 or 40 gigabyte ipod? As I have access to a Windows 2000 computer, it would seem that this would make things easy. (What is unclear to me is if the updater is included with a new ipod, or needs to be obtained elsewhere).

Thank you, so

It's included w/the the iPod, but it's bundled in w/other software.

Best thing to do is just download it from Apple ( http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/). This way you're assured to get the latest version as well.
