A couple iPod questions

Hey everyone.

I am thinking of purchasing an iPod, but have a couple questions first.

1) If you have an iPod, do you have to use iTunes with it? Are you able to use songs already on your HD?

2) Can you create your own file structures?

Ex- Genre-> Artist -> Album-> Song

If you cant, how is it set up?

Thanks to those who help me.

Welcome to the lounge...

1) You don't have to use iTunes. There's a lot of 3rd party software packages you can use - some free, some trialware. Check out http://ipodlounge.com/downloads_windows.php for the windows software roundup.

2) File structures on your PC are your own choice. iTunes can re-arrange them how it sees fit, but this can be turned off and you keep the way you've set up your directories.
On the iPod itself, the files are split across 20 directories named F00 to F19. This is transparent to the user, as the iPod uses the mp3 tag info to catalogue what's there. You can browse by genre, artists, album name, song name, or composer.

cheers,

Thanks man, that helped :).

So if I have existing music files on my PC I can still put them on my iPod? Do I just have to use one of those progs?

Thanks again.

iTunes is just like any other Media Player. You rip your CDs to mp3s (or AAC files) and you can import existing mp3s into your iTunes library.

Then, just sync to the iPod.

The music store is just another means to get tunes into your library (i.e. by buying them from Apple).

I think folks feel that iTunes requires you to only use music that you've bought from the store. That's not the case at all.

And Timmo's right, no directories w/the iPod. It's all tag based. Once you get your songs tagged correctly you'll find it's a much better way to organize anyway.

When you consolidate your music collection on your pc with iTunes, it will place files in the folder hierachy it uses -
/iTunes/iTunesMusic/BandName/AlbumName, and it will rename the file to the song name - to the best it can. This means if you undo the changes you will no longer have the bandname in the song title. No problem if you are willing to accept you will always use iPod and iTunes.
