NEWBIE - Please help!
Well since no one is responding to my message in the W98 topic...
1: Do I only have to update to 2.0.1 for it to work on Windows 98 FIRST EDITION (not SE)?
1A: If not, then what else will I have to do?
1B: Can I just hook up the USB cable to the port and go on my way or do I have to buy something extra?
(UNRELATED QUESTIONS to W98, but about the Pod)
2: Does this thing ever skip (sorry for my stupidity, but this is coming from a diehard CD player guy ;))
3: How loud does this thing go?
3A: How good are the headphones that come with the Pod?
4: Can I use this as an "extra" HD (meaning can I put any other files on here that I want regardless of the extension)?
5: How many mp3s have you got on yours?

1. I'm a mac guy but I was under the impression that you need SE to use an iPod.
1B. USB works [although slowly] for transferring files. By using firewire, you can also charge the iPod.
2. It will skip if you really move it around. It has way better anti-skip than any cd player.
3. Loud. If you use really high-end, high-impedance headphones, you'll have it cranked up to get decent volume.
3A. They're decent. But if you're typically a person who doesn't settle for 'out-of-the-box', then you'll want to upgrade.
4. Yes. It can function as a regular computer hard drive.
5. 2300+ and always rising.

Thanks for the info! My old/current CD player is a Sony D-E301, and it's volume isn't too loud. I need something to crank up high enough so I can completely drown out all the yelling on the bus. I'm still awaiting on that W98 question though. That's my whole determining factor of whether I get the Pod or not.

If you want to drown out noise, look into earphones. They go into your ears like earplugs and turn talking people into silent people who are flapping their mouths. Its makes the music sound so much better without background noise mixed in. And it saves your hearing.
The Sony EX71's are good. $50 or so.
Shure e2c's are better $100 or so.
There are higher-end ones too but maybe thier not the best to carrying on buses.
There are tons of reviews around here on them. Look into them even if you don't get an iPod.

Says right on Apple's website you need Win2K or XP
Is there anything I can do to get the USB support to work with the Pod? If not, then it looks like I won't be buying this :( :(

No, you HAVE to have Win98SE to use an iPod.
