Cant format - disk write error

I'm using XP Pro on a a Compaq Evo N1000V P4 2GHz 256Mb which has an inbuilt 4-pin Firewire port.

Got an Ipod (3 Gen, 20 Gb) on Monday.

The system will see that something is there, but doesn't usually recognise that it's an Ipod, because it's not formatted.

Can't format through Windows (My Computer). This causes the system to crash.

Can't format through Ipod Updater - comes up with various errors, mainly "Disk write error".

Even the guy at the Apple shop couldn't help.

Any ideas?

THanks

Sounds like a sick iPod... Have you tried the "Updater" several times? I had a problem with my iPod, went through some contortions getting it back. Several times when running updater I got error messages such as "can't mount iPod". I tried it numerous times, finally got it to work. I was forcing the iPod into "disk mode" which seemed to help.

Not sure if that will help or not, but good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

I've used the updater many, many times. It doesn't want to play with my ipod. There have been several error messages, such as "Can't mount ipod" or "Disk write error" etc.

I don't believe it's sick, as I took it back to the Apple store yesterday and they were able to format it as a Mac Ipod and it worked. But my computer just does not want to play with it, and it routinely crashes when I connect the ipod and try to format it. Very frustrating.

Cheers,

Problem solved using USB instead of Firewire.
