3rdGen USB & Charger & PC at same time?

Is it possible to have a 3rdGen IPod connected to the PC using the USB cable and the firewire cable connected to the charger at the same time?

The USB connection sucks the battery down pretty fast if I am transferring files.

The cable I am talking about is the one Apple makes that has both USB & Firewire.

That's how I have mine connected. Connecting it this way allows you to recharge you iPod while the computer is turned off.

It is the intended use of the cable--that's why it's made that way. Didn't instructions tell you that? I know their instructions are somewhat light but I would have thought that they at least told you how to hook it up?
