Strategy needed

I want to add 100 CDs to my iPod using another computer without losing the 200 already loaded. 3G,20G, HP, Windows XP, a good firewire card. I use iTunes regularly and I want to keep it that way, but for this effort, I will use whatever, provided that it doesn't conflict with iTunes. Can some one of you brilliant techies out there give me the steps, recommend the software, and stave off disaster? I've made a backup using Windows copy protocols. But that won't help when I'm 350 miles away for 3 wks if I screw up.

When I return, I want to add the 100 loaded elsewhere to my library of 200.

Please be simple.

I do not understand, why you can't install iTunes on another computer, connect iPod, and then just drag and drop your 100 CD on IPOD icon?

I may well be able to; but I don't want to take the chance that the pod will auto-synch when I attach it to iTunes with 100 new songs. That means my existing library is gone. And you can't change the synch options unless the pod is mounted. That's why I want a strategy to avoid the possibility of that happening.

You can load all of your current 200 onto the iPod as a firewire drive. They aren't playable, but you have them on you. [Keep a few duplicated onto the iPod the regular way so you can listen while travelling.]

You arrive at your destination and copy the 200 onto the new machine. Mix in the other 100. Load them all into iTunes and then sync to the iPod so you can play them.

Before you leave, load them back onto the iPod as a firewire drive. When you're home, move them all over to your computer and sync again in iTunes.

That's probably the least scary way because you'll always have the files on the iPod without any accidental erasing.

The downside is not having perfect track of ratings, play counts, etc.

MikeM, that's interesting. I never even considered that. Thanks.

When you connect the iPod to the other computer (with iTunes) the first screen that comes up will prompt you to auto-sync or not, just uncheck the option to keep the iPod Updated. Just read carefully.

I've seen people do this before, but the message is right there...

I didn't remember that from when I installed iTunes. The thing to do, then, is restore the pod to free up space, copy the iTunes library onto it as a file (I don't need to play tunes while traveling - I have a satellite radio). I move the library file to the PC disk drive -and then after installing iTunes import the file either before or after burning the additional CDs. Right?
