Charge from computer w/o mounting?

I was wondering if anyone here has any insight into this. I'd like to be able to put my 30GB iPod into its dock, which is plugged into the FW card in my computer, and have it charge but not be mounted by Windows. It's just annoying to have to unmount the iPod after docking it just to charge it up.

The only way I can see this being possible is by doing it physically (not by software). It could be possible if you had a switch, switching between two firewire plugs. With one of the plugs, only have the two power cables connected, and the other one leave it as it is. This could allow you to charge from the computer, and not get that 'ok to disconnect' screen.
