iPod Freezes/Reboots/Folder Icon Issues

My girlfriends 5GB iPod just completely crashed on her. Maybe you guys can help out.

She was listening to some music when the iPod just froze on her. No big deal there, she just reset it. Except we she reset it, it kept freezing after a minute or so. Then after resetting it 10 times in 10 minutes she got a new screen that showed a Folder icon with an exclamation point inside of a triangle. I'm not a Mac person but I knew that wasn't a good sign on any electronic device. We have updated the software, restored the ipod, forced the firewire connection (no idea what that was for), etc. etc.. We figure its something corrupt on the Hard-drive but since our warranty is out we'd like to explore every other option first, before we pay Apple to fix it. Anyone else having a similar problem?

P.S. I have a 10G and it works great!

i have a similar problem and so do other people with the 5gb 1st gen ipods. I have a 3g and im going to try the forced firewire mode. I recommend doing a HD scan to see if it has errors. More often than not the 1st gen ipod's (especially 5gb) are seeming to have HD errors.

Same EXACT problem here. 5gb 1st gen iPod. I can't even get it into diagnostic mode to do a disk scan because it just keeps rebooting. Does NO ONE have a solution? How crappy...

To add: The only time I can get the iPod to settle down without rebooting is if I connect it to my G4. In that case I can get it into firewire disk mode and it seems to function fine. Once I attempt to disconnect it and use it portably, or plug it into the outlet, the rebooting/freezing cycles continue.

I was getting the same error. What I did was this:

I forced the iPod to mount by holding down the forward and back button for several seconds and opened the disk utility . I selected the iPod drive then zeroed all the data on the drive (click options in disk utility and check zero data) and gave it a new format. I then reinstalled all the software as described in the Apple article.

It works fine now.
