MP3 vs. AAC - size question

Hi,

I'm debating whether or not to change my mp3s that I already had on my hard drive into AAC's. (Actually putting the CD back in and re-ripping).

I thought I remembered reading about something that said the AAC format was smaller than MP3 and, therefore, took up less space on the hard drive.

However, I've re-converted a few of my discs and, in all cases, the AAC file was slighly larger than the MP3.

Is that normal? If that's the case did I just read something wrong? I'm fairly certain Apple implied that they are smaller files and more manageable or something like that.

Thanks a lot.

They're smaller for similar quality audio. A 192k mp3 will always be about the same size as a 192k aac. But with aac, you can use 128 or 160k, both smaller files, to get the quality of a 192k mp3. Bad wording on Apple's part if you ask me.
