5gb ipod: no aac?

hi, i wanted to test the aac-format to save diskspace, because i only have a 5gb ipod. i bought it a month ago from a friend.

is it possible that a 1st gen ipod doesnt support aac? i ripped in easy cd extractor and wanted to upload with xplay and it says that it does not support that format. do i need a firmware-upgrade or something? it is a switched ipod, from mac to win :D

You need the 1.3 firmware on your iPod.

Not sure if Xplay supports AAC - it didn't used to. iTunes does.

i got firmware 1.3,
i guess i need itunes then, i heard xplay doesnt work anymore if i install itunes, is it true?
