cant connect :-((
Hello,
I just received a beautiful Ipod and I cannot connect it to my PC (Win XP Home)...
I have a DV card (Canopus DvRaptor) and I thought my IEEE 1394 FireWire port (that works fine with DV recorder) was OK to plug the Ipod. But obviously, it's not...
Does anyone has an idea about this frustrating problem? Do I have to purchase another FireWire card?
Thanks.

Does your iPod FireWire cable physically fit into the socket, or is it the wrong shape?
# 2 Re: cant connect :-((
yes it fits, using the FireWire adapter included in the Ipod box.
Thanks...

when you plug it into the port does you pc see the drive as a removable drive and do you get the do not disconnect messege on your ipod. if not then you firewire card made not provide power to it so you can not charge it or get it to work if you have not charge the ipod fully with the power adapter. you made need to get a new card. plus are you using a 4 pin or 6 pin connection? 4 pin been not recharge just file transfer only. Your DV will work great with the card but it gets power from the outlet so that not the problem but if your card does not provide power for any firewire devices than a new card is needed.

Hello, thanks for your help!
Here's my replies :
>when you plug it into the port does you pc see the drive as a removable drive and do you get the do not disconnect messege on your ipod.
NO - nothing happens
>if not then you firewire card made not provide power to it so you can not charge it or get it to work if you have not charge the ipod fully with the power adapter. you made need to get a new card. plus are you using a 4 pin or 6 pin connection? 4 pin been not recharge just file transfer only.
You're right : as I use a 4 pin connector, no energy comes from the card I guess
>Your DV will work great with the card but it gets power from the outlet so that not the problem but if your card does not provide power for any firewire devices than a new card is needed.
So if I understand well, I have to have a card that provides energy? If so, do you think that a new card is compatible with my existing DV card (no conflicts?).
And last question, what type of card/connector do you suggest me to purchase?
Thanks again, I appreciate very much your time and advices!
Yann.

Does your card have a 6 pin connector on it? if so remove the 6pin to 4pin adaptor on the ipod cable and try to see if that works. The adaptor that comes with the ipod was for people who have firewire port on their laptop and they are usually 4 pin but need to charge the ipod first so it is powered up to work with it. Again see if your card has a 6pin connection and try it out.

there's only a 4 pins connector I am afraid...
But if I understand well, the 6 pin FireWire brings energy to the Ipod, right? But I already charged allright the device through the AC adapter. The Ipod is then fully charged. But still no communication at all from him to the PC...
thanks again,
Yann

I contacted the manufacturer of my Dv Card (Canopus), who says :
Unfortunately your Ipod will not work in the DVRaptor as the firewire connection is not OHCI compliant.
Does anyone understand this?
Sorry for my ignorance ;-)

That sounds stupid cuz I have a cheap pcmica card and it works great with my ipod but had to buy a firewire hub for power to the ipod and 3 external drives. It might have something to do with the OS(XP is really on about this) but that should not be a problem than so it may be that the card is just junk. I not saying it not good but if you can hookup your DV recorder than the ipod should not be a problem. You might need to buy a new firewire card after all. Did the card come with the DV recorder, if so it may have been configured for thge recorder only. With a new card you should have no problems with connecting the ipod and the recorder(might need a adaptor for the recorder). I try pricewatch.com for prices on firewire cards and to see if they ship international, ebay a go place to look, on which card to get I heard adaptic is good.
