Replacement iPod only works with MMJB!

I just got a replacement 30GB iPod after sending my last one in for service. I plugged it into the dock and it said "Do not disconnect". OK, fine. It's got 2.0.1 installed, and I'm fine with that. I'd prefer not to update to 2.1 due to the disconnect issues.

So iPodManager recognizes the iPod, MusicMatch Jukebox recognizes it, but NO other software can see the iPod!
I have ephPod, MediaCenter, vPod, Anapod, XPlay, iPodSync. NONE of them can find the iPod!!! Of course Apple has nothing to say, since it works with their bundled software, and they don't support third party apps. So I'm stuck.

Does anyone have ANY idea what could be going wrong? I've already restored several times, that doesn't seem to help.

Thanks!

Eddie

I've always been able to resolve this issue by disabling the iPodManager Service (use task manager, or the services control window) and just letting the PC recognize it as a drive - MC 9 works great this way - previously when I used the iPodManager, it screwed up every other app in terms of recognizing the iPod - except MMJB

Well, I tried what you suggested, but I still have the same problem.

Have you tried formatting the iPod for the software you are trying to use? (MC 9, Ephpod, etc)

I'm not sure what you mean...? I've restored the iPod several times, but that hasn't worked. If you're talking about initializing the iPod in MC9, I can't do that unless MC9 actually sees the iPod, and right now it doesn't. For that matter, none of the programs I have see the iPod, so I don't think I could use them to format it...

Did you enable firewire disk mode in iPod Manager? The purpose of iPod Manager is to hide the iPod Drive so it doesn't appear in My Computer. All other apps need it to be there to work.

I've always recommended uninstalling iPod Manager anyway. It's not needed for anything...

I tried uninstalling iPod Manager and all iPod software, including MMJB and the iPod driver for MMJB. I also went into the registry and deleted all mention of iPod. Then I restarted the system and put the iPod in the dock. It connected, but I still couldn't see it from any of the software I have. This is absolutely driving me nuts. I'm afraid I may have to install the 2.1 driver, which I REALLY do not want to do...

Well, if you can't get the iPod recognized, you won't be able to get the 2.1 firmware added. It doesn't do anything but add the firmware to the iPod. I'm using it (with MC9) on my iPod no problem.

Now, here's what I'd do.

When you uninstalled MMJB, did you first uninstall the MMJB iPod Plugin? You need to do that first.

I'd try unisntalling the iPod and your firewire card from Device Manager, then reboot. Make sure there is NO iPod software on your PC. Delete the MMJB, iPod, and iTunes folders from your Program Files folder if they are still there after uninstalling.

We want to start w/a clean PC and let Windows do what it wants to do - assign a drive letter to that iPod. Then we'll add the appropriate software.

The iPod is recognized, but only in MMJB and iPodManager. So I can update the firmware if I want, but due to the issues of not being able to play music while it's docked, I'd rather not upgrade to 2.1 if at all possible...

So, I did uninstall the MMJB iPod Plugin first. I don't have a firewire card, the firewire ports are built into the PC. So you're saying I should delete the driver for the IEEE Host Controller? Then reboot?

I'll try it out and let you know what I get...

Adam,

OK, I removed all of Apple's iPod drivers, managers, updaters, etc. Then I went in and removed the iPod Plugin for MusicMatch, and then MusicMatch. Then I removed the iPod and the IEEE Host Controller from Device Manager - that actually caused a LOT of problems, resulting in my PC being down for most of yesterday... At any rate, I'm now back up, and everything is cleaned out. I plug my iPod in, it says "Do not disconect", the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon shows up in the system tray, but the iPod does NOT mount as a drive, and XPlay along with all of the others still do NOT see it...

This is absolutely driving me nuts. I'm just about ready to sell this thing on eBay and go buy a Zen...

Please! If there's anything you can do to help, please let me know.

In the iPod manager, do you have "Disk Mode" enabled?

If you do, you should be able to see the iPod from inside Windows Explorer. If you can't see it and access it as a drive, you may have a configuration conflict..

start your disk manager and see if the iPod is listed as a logical disk. If it is, check the drive letter assigned to it. The default drive is "H". If you already have an "H" drive, you will need to change the one assigned to your iPod.

No, it never got recognized as a drive. But, I did install 2.1 on my PC, and when I restarted it recognized my iPod as a drive and all third party software now works. Note that I did NOT install 2.1 firmware on my iPod, just the updater on the PC...

Weird, huh??

Anyways, disaster averted...

Thanks for the help!
