Firmware 2.1 and AAC

I just got my 40 Gig replaced after the firmware upgrade (2.1) failed to install and sent the ipod to the hospital. Now I am hesitant to upgrade; my question is, "Having only firmware 2.0.2, will my iPod be able to read AAC files purchased from iTunes; or I am obligated to upgrade in order for my iPod to read AAC and WAVs?"

You'll be able to read AAC just fine w/2.01. But you shouldn't worry about the upgrade..tons of people have done it w/o a problem.
