Older firewire caution/question

I have an older Sony Vaio (F340 bought in 1999) that I tried to prep for iPod use. I expanded the RAM and upgraded the OS to XP. Turns out there are no drivers that will run the Firewire (i.Link/1394) with XP because it's an older version that is not OHCI compliant (Sony was a pioneer installing firewire with its machines, but I have the older S200 i.Link rather than the newer S400 version that is OHCI compliant).

It looks as though Sony provides drivers for use with Windows 2000, but before I uninstall XP and upgrade to 2000 instead, I want to make sure the iPod will work with the older firewire controller. Does anyone know? Barring that, any suggestions on how I should configure my machine to best use the iPod?

Thanks ever so much, in advance.

If I were you I'd stick with XP on the machine and get yourself a PCMCIA firewire card. The iPod is very picky about what firewire it works with, and I'd be willing to bet that the older implementation you have will give you problems.

If you went the PCMCIA route, you could get a card that either has an external power supply or one w/2 6-pin ports so you could connect one port to the iPod and the other to the iPod's AC Adaptor (w/an additional cable)--thus giving you power to your iPod when transferring. A huge benefit.

In most cases the drivers for Win 2000 will work with XP

The 2000 drivers would not install--again, probably because of the change in the firewire standard.
