Need some help in getting my iPod to work

Hi, I'm new here and was hoping someone could help me in getting my iPod (2nd Generation 10 GB) to work. Sorry if anything I ask has been answered elsewhere; I just couldn't find anything to help my problem.

Anyway, my 'pod has been sitting on my desk in its box since Christmas of last year. I have Windows 98 (SE) and I didn't know you needed XP to use it when I decided to get one, so for the better part of a year I've been waiting until we got a new computer to use my pod...that was, until I found this webpage:

http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6581

I followed all those instructions and got up to installing the updater part--at that point, I tried to follow these instructions:

http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2970

However, it seems that those instructions are for the 3rd generation iPod and the 2.01 Updater. Is this right? I tried to follow the instructions when installing my updater (1.3), but the first thing I saw was a "choose your language" option, not the "Welcome to the Installshield Wizard for iPod For Windows download installer" welcome screen. That message came next. I tried to open the udater through searching the files and folders, just as suggested, and I found the file (although it is not the same updater as shown in the pic in ibons' post) and copied it to my desktop. From there, with the installer still open waiting for me to click next, I opened the updater (now located on the desktop) and got this message:

The installation cannot be run by directly launching the MSI package. You must run setup.exe.

So I just clicked the "next" button on the installer. I did not get any messge that said I had the wrong operating system, nor did any other problem occur during installation. In fact, I can now run the program. When I open the program up, with iPod connected, I cannot click restore or anything else. It acts as if the program is frozen; if I click on anything I just hear the standard Windows "ding." All the while the iPod says "OK to disconnect" on the screen. When I do disconnect, the program comes back to life and says "Can't mount iPod."

So basically, I am very confused. If anyone can understand all that, my question is: Is it possible to use a G2 iPod with Windows 98 SE? Have I done something wrong? What exactly should I do?

Again, sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere.

OK, you installed the Patch as well (referenced in the first post)?

The reason the program is "frozen" is that your iPod isn't being detected by the firewire card.

What type if card do you have? Try uninstalling it in Device Manager and then rebooting.

Yeah, I have installed that patch. I have a CompUSA PCI 1394 Firewire Host Adapter (that's what the box says). I will try to unistall it as you say and try again. Thanks, I'll let you know if it works.

Well, I re-downloaded and installed the patch, removed the firewire card from the device manager, reinstalled it upon reboot, and tried again. It still was frozen and the iPod still said "OK to disconnect."

When I was installing the card, I got some messages that told me the stuff being installed was older than what was on my system. Does anyone know if this could have anything to do with it?

Not to be picky here, but did you install the patch before installing the card physically in your PC? That is important.

If not, install the patch w/o the card installed. Then add the card to your PC.

If you've done that, does the card show as working OK in Device Manager?

This could all end up being a problem w/the firewire card (i.e. one that doesn't work w/the iPod). But you need to at least get the iPod flashing "Do Not Disconnect".

so much for that friendly apple interface they sold so many computers with. to have a blinking road sign in your face for whatever time it takes to sync and whatnot is just crass and stupid. what were they smoking? even my sony clie has a better message, and that's SONY, king of crass and stupid.

I had a problem with my firewire card, but it was just that it wasn't providing power (now it does), which really shouldn't have been a problem.

And yes, it could have been MUCH easier to set the iPod up, something Apple didn't consider too much for the windows world.

Nope, I sure didn't install the patch before installing the card in my PC. Should I delete it from the device manager and then take it out of the compter, install the patch, and go at it all again?

BTW--be as picky as you want--I just want this thing to work! :)
