where to go now?

Ok now probably a bit of a newbie but any help would a great. Bought a 40Gb Ipod 3 weeks ago, and only managed to get 1Gb of music on it through itunes on a friends powerbook. Now I use windows and ordered the USB2 cable and now have access to my hard drives worth of music, or do I ?? Tried http://www.ephpod.com/ and itunes but to no success it says do I want to format the ipod. Now I don't mind losing the tunes on there but want to make sure I don't go & do something stupid that leaves me with a nice looking paperweight.
Any suggestions on what to do as I will be a windows user from now on.

I also would like to use my ipod as a portable hard drive so if I am at a work pc I can download a file to my ipod, is this possible ? and does the work pc need the same software ie ephpod or does XP support drag & drop??

Many thanks for any help on any of the points above

the ipod must be formatted to either use mac or windows, it can't work with both at the same time. so you do need to reformat your ipod.

yes you can use it as a portable harddrive.
yes it supports drag and drop once it's mounted as a portable harddrive.
