iPod wont synch with my computer.

I just got my new 40GB iPod, charged it and went to synch with iTunes on my Windows XP. I bought the firewire card and when I plug the iPod in it says it is charging, so i know the firewire is working. But, I can't get it to synch with iTunes and transfer my music. Any suggestions?
