I'm kind of an ipod newbie, and I've been trying to connect my mac ipod with win xp for days. i've done a lot of reading but still can't figure it out:

I have a 1st gen. 5gb ipod - - could that be a problem?

I have a dell with xp and firewire ports, and every time i connect it to the firewire, it won't recorgnize the ipod ANYWHERE (ephpod, xplay, itunes, my computer, anywhere!)

I have booted the ipod into the "ok to disconnect" mode and still can't get the xp system to recognize it!

This was a gift from a friend but I just want to restore it to a WINDOWS ipod so I don't have to deal with 3rd party software. ANY SUGGESTIONS?!?!?! Thanks!
