Battery life of 3rd gen a dealbreaker?
Hi,
The 3rd gen's realtime smartlist ability on the ipod is an absolute dealmaker to me. Problem is, right now I rate the 6 hour battery life as an absolute dealbreaker. So could someone tell me which one I am overemphasizing? The competition all has much better battery life, but much worse firmware.
Thanks.

pfft... the smartlists FAR outweigh any probs with battery life. 6 hours is HEAPS.
I say buy it.. if the battery life isn't sufficient when you're out and about.. buy the belkin battery pack.. or take your charger.

I charge my ipod each morning and in the evening so the 6 hours of battery life is sufficient for my purposes. I only use the iPod for about 4 hours during the day.
So you should consider how long you are likely to use the iPod in-between charging periods.

I won't say that battery life isn't important. It is, but six-eight hours is a nice amount of time. That's more than you get out of many laptop batteries not connected to power. The question comes to how you will use it. If you have the ability to charge the battery every night you should be good to go. Also I think the way a person uses their iPod highly affects the way their battery lasts in a given day: Backlight, scrolling, skipping, file size/bitrate, audiobooks, etc. Since it sounds like you will use the smartplaylists a lot you may be able to squeeze out some extra juice in that you won't always be searching for a song...
I have in theh past gotten my iPod to last just over eight hours in my car drive from Rapid City SD to Ames IA. I was going to report that I had done the same thing just yesterday, but my car breaking down but a wrench in this test.
Invest in a car charger, though.
Think about your usage. I think you could be happy with the iPod even with the 6-8 hours of battery.
Cheers,
Stu

Er, the old iPods have the same smartlist capability as the 3rd gen ones.
Or are you talking about the On-the-go Playlists? That's a different story.
