Newbie Ipod User with Win2K Problem

Hi,

I recently received a 40GB Ipod as a gift, and can't seem to get it to work under Windows 2000.

The firewire card gets recognised, and so does the Ipod itself (it keeps displaying 'Do Not Disconnect') and I can eject it from the Windows Hardware menu.

However, although I have it installed, the Ipod installer kept resetting itself when it tried to configure the Ipod. This also happens when I take it out of the dock, or when I dock it, then undock it.

Also, running programs once its docked (e.g. Itunes) seem to give kernel errors, and programs, and windows itself seems to have fatal errors until eventually restarting. Web surfing also sometimes shuts down the PC and restarts it.

I reinstalled Windows from scratch and been trying to get it to work for 2 weeks.

Also, one of my hard disk is FAT32 the other isn't (Windows is not on the FAT32 system). The firewire card is generic (though it was found by windows easily).

Please, the gift was a college graduation one from my parents, and I really don't want such an expensive gift to end up unused in a drawer somewhere. Any help provided is most appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Don't connect your iPod during any of this untill told to.

If your not at SP4 with all the hotfixes, you should download and install them first.

Then download MMJB 8.1 from the musicmatch website. This product is more stable on Win2K.

Once installed, using the built in "Download Portable Device Driver" option in MMJB go get the iPod 2 device driver. Install that.

Once your done altogether with this stuff mount you iPod, this should be stable now. But your not done yet.

Go to apple and download the 2.1 firmware for your G3 iPod, and using the 2.1 updater install the firmware.

Hardboot the iPod once all that is done (Switch Hold On then Off then press Menu and Play at the same time for a few seconds).

You have now eliminated any potential software problems.

Try it now.

Open up task manager. Go into processes. Look for a process called "flashksk.exe". End it.

It's part of a driver for smart media card readers, and although the use of it is unknown, it's recomended not to delete it as it may come back to bit you in the _____. Basically many people have had this problem, me included, and just every time before disconnecting the ipod I have to end this process (you only have to do it once a startup). It's a pain, but it allows you to safely disconnect the ipod which keeps everyone happy.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I'd like to first thank rszkodzi and Lance for their help.

I have tried both of your suggestions, but the Ipod still freezes up.

I recently got hold of an alternative iLink card, and this stopped the system from restarting. However, the ipod software does not seem to recognise the ipod if docked the second time in one boot. Further, the system seems to hang randomly when the ipod is connected instead of restarting.

It may be that the iLink card's software is slightly older, and I have yet to update the drivers.

However, I very much appreciate your help.

Thanks again,

Alex

Let me guess...when you look at the iPod in your Disk Management, there is no File System for the device? Thats because when you try and run the Updater, its trying to format your iPod to read fat32. However, there are limitations with Windows 2000 and formatting a partition on anything over 32GB. - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;184006

Seems like your gonna need to find some other way to format the iPod's file system. Im having exactly the same problem with my new 40GB iPod and Windows 2000. Im gonna try a few other Partition programs to see if I can format the #### thing! I'll keep you posted if I have any luck!

Thanks evil sausage for your response.

I think that problem is easily reconciled by using XP. Problem is, not everyone wants to use it.

The majority of problems seem to be solved by either an OS upgrade or an expensive iLink card.

I'm still at square one as far as getting this thing to work is concerned. Thanks for keeping me posted - I'd be most appreciative if you could let me know what happens at your end.
