USB transfer is slow. Is this normal?

iPod keeps telling me my USB is a non-high speed HUB. As such the transfer seems really slow (about 20min - half hour for 1 album). Do I need a high speed card for the USB or is this a crazy iPod thing??

It sounds like you've got USB 1.1 (Basic Speed - 1.5/12Mbps), rather than USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed - 480Mbps). It so, that's your problem, in which case you guessed the solution - a new card. I was in the same position until I got my Firewire card.

The other possibility is that you have a USB2.0 hub but it's not working properly. I bought a USB2.0 card to use with my XP machine a while ago, and have never been able to stop the PC thinking it's a USB1.1 card.

Hi Samwise,

Do you know how I can tell if my usb 2.0 card is working properly? The device manager lists it as a "USB 2.0 Hub", but the transfer rates are still slow.

Ahem... Yeeees.

The truth is, I bought a USB2.0 card but am still straggling along at USB1.1 speeds with it - I just cannot get it configured properly, even with Windows XP SP1a - and even after a reformat and reinstall. Just like you, I have a "USB 2.0 Hub" listed on my Device Manager, but no speed.

I do need a few more USB ports - I've filled my six - so I might well acquire another USB2.0 card at some point and see how -that- goes. I'll avoid the generic ones this time...

PS. I bought a Firewire card when I got the iPod, so I've always just used that. Absolutely bulletproof, touch wood.

Hi,

If you are using a USB 2.0 hub, and you plug a USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 device into the hub, the hub speed will drop to that of the slowest device. One thing you might want to check if you did that.

Oh... not silly at all... I'm using an external cdrw drive (usb 1.1) which is plugged in as well... that might be the cause.

Thanks,
Am.
