windows me
Looking at the technical specifications for the m9244x/a ipod, windows me isn't included as a supported operating system. will the ipod work with windows me? also, will it work with windows me/usb 1.1?

as far as i know, the brand new 3g (third generation) iPods, the 10, 20 and 40GB versions, do NOT support Windows Millennium Edition. However, the 15 and 30GB models are exactly the same 3g model, but they do support Windows ME.

I doubt it's got anything to do with what the iPod hardware supports.
It's rather what Apple as a company choose to support.
There are enough Win2K/XP users out there to be coping with, without worrying
about Win9x code MS itself has no interest in supporting.

Yes the new 3G iPods DO support Windows ME, but iTunes doesn't and niether does the 2.1 firmware update. So you can use an iPod with Windows ME but you have to use either MusciMatch or EphPod and you can only update to firmware version 2.01

I don't think you need windows XP/200 to use the ipod, you just need XP/200 to format it. I think if you get a friend with XP to set it up on their computer then you can just use it on ME with 3rd party sopftware
EDIT: and you can use the mini with USB 1.0 or 1.1, the download will just be much slower
