Cant delete manager software

I've spent two hours trying to get my niece's new 20GB ipod to work with a Windows Xp machine. I can't get the Update program to work, and note that people here recommend getting rid of the Manager program - but I can't delete it as 'access is denied'. For a while we did get the ipod up as the F drive, but Mp3 files copied across didn't show on the pod. Then I reset it, and now can't any connection. This really is like the bad old days - any ideas?

OK, well, you should make sure that the iPod isn't connected when you uninstall iPod Manager. Don't delete it, you need to uninstall it in Add/Remove programs.

If you still get "Access Denied", I'd check task Manager and make sure no iPod Services are running. If they are just stop them.

Also, you can't just copy mp3s over to the iPod. I hope you understand that. You need to use one of the uploading programs (like MMJB, MC9, ephpod, or Xplay).

Thanks Adam. I'm mainly a Mac person so Windows baffles me. I've uninstalled Manager, and now the Updater has just worked fine, restoring the software. Now the Ipod is saying Do not disconnect... is this normal?

And where are the uploading programs you mentioned - did they come with the Ipod, as I can't see them installed. The ones we seem to have are Musicmatch and Audiblemanager.

Thanks for your quick reply.

An update - I found Ephpod and installed it, removing Musicmatch. But the Ipod just goes into 'Do not disconnect' mode and Ephpod says the ipod doesn't have the correct directory structure, but can't build one (says error in \control or such like).

I can restore the software using the Updater - so I'm stuck now...

OK, you're super close. First off, the iPod will always flash that when connected to the PC. That means it's speaking to the computer and things are good. To safely disconnect it, click on the "Safely Remove Hardware icon in the systry (lower left-hand corner). It looks like this: [img=http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ashawley01/images/safely_remove.gif][img].

Next, regarding the Ephpod error. It's a bug in ephod, but easily fixed.

Open up My Computer. In there will be a new drive that is the iPod. Open this up. In there is a hidden folder called "ipod_control". If you don't see it, you need to enable viewing of hidden folders by clicking on Tools>Folder Options. On the "View" tab is a checkbox to enable viewing of hidden folders.

Right, once you can see the "ipod_control" folder, delete it.

Then fireup ephod, it will prompt you to build the directory again, this time it will be able. to.

You're in business.

Just so you know, iTunes for Windows is coming out Thursday...so you'll be in familiar territory soon. ;)
