HELP! :) Cant get Ipod to charge with 6-pin FireWire cable under Win98SE . .

I've searched extensively all over the Internet, and have yet to find any answers regarding this problem. So, any help you might be able to provide would be wonderful!

I am running Win98SE under a laptop, and have a 30gb Ipod (3rd Gen), with the latest firmware installed.

I purchased a generic 1394 IEEE FireWire PCMCIA card (maybe this is the problem?), and while the card seems to work fine under Win98SE, I cannot get my Ipod to charge while it is hooked up. I am using the 6-pin connecter, and have nothing else hooked up to the FireWire card. After connecting the Ipod, I get the "Do not disconnect" message on the Ipod, and it enters into "Disk Mode".

I have tried resetting the Ipod, and then forcing into FireWire mode, but it immediately reverts back to "Disk Mode", again warning me not to disconnect.

My computer doesn't have USB 2.0, so getting the USB cable from Apple doesn't make much sense, as I'd be transferring at a terribly slow USB 1.1 speed.

Even though my FireWire cable works with my Ipod, when I try to sync my Ipod up, the battery usually dies about 20 minutes into the sync process (since it isn't charging), presumably because the snyc process is so HD intensive. So, I end up having to sync little pieces of my music collection at a time, which is really a pain!

Anyone have any ideas? Thank you SO much!

welcome to ipodlounge, MarkinCo! :)

i think your problem lies with the firewire card. the ipod tends to be very picky. usually firewire cards with via chipsets tend to work best. you can get such cards from companies like adaptec, belkin or orange micro...

the ipod is recognised though, right (because you can sync)?

**EDIT**: don't listen to m.r.m. He's about to get a powerbook so all of his windows knowledge is going out the...er, Window. ;)

You actually don't have a problem at all. Laptop firewire cards (even ones with 6-pin ports) don't supply power. They are designed that way to conserve your laptop's battery.

But...there is a solution. If you're card has 2 6-pin port, get another firewire cable, and connect it to the 2nd port. then plug it into the AC adaptor which you plug into an outlet.

Ta-da! Power to the iPod.

Regarding the "Do Not Disconnect". That is what the iPod will always flash when it's connected to the PC. It means the PC is recognizing the iPod, which is good. To disconnect, unmount it by clicking on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the systray.

aww man adam. neat. i was guessing i admit it. although i had a suspicion that you could maybe turn off the firewire powering capability on laptops to conserve power. you da man, adam-san. :)

btw, i may not be getting that pb anytime soon. :(

I bought a Firewire bus card that comeswith a small plug and the manual was saying about "Input 12 DC" (but no further references), in this plug I put a 7.5 DC input (connector + in the center) and charged my IPOD, now the problem that my Ipod doesn't connect with my laptop :(
