yup, ive tried everything...

..or so I think.

Executive summary: my iPod is toast and I don't know what to do.

I got a 3G 20Gb iPod yesterday. I installed the iPod software and MMJB on my winXP laptop (I didn't have MMJB installed before). I imported all my music into MMJB's library, copied some tracks over to the iPod (connected via a belkin cardbus firewire card). No problem! I can even connect it to my colleague's OS X TiBook and mount it flawlessly, on the desktop and in iTunes. Cross-patform bliss, sun shining, birds singing, all that jazz.

Today however the beast has turned. I decided I'd rather sync it with my desktop XP machine instead (the firewire ports in that are powered, unlike the laptop, so the iPod can recharge while syncing). I went through the same install rigmarole on the desktop machine, but the iPod wouldn't show for love nor money on the desktop or to the iPod manager. MMJB doesn't see it either.

I've reset the iPod a couple of times: I had to unplug it from the dock after an interminable "do not disconnect" wait once for example.

I have MacDrive 5 installed on both machines by the way, if that makes any difference.

So now my _laptop_ won't see the iPod either. Things looking bad, I decide to use the iPod updater software to zap it back to its original state. But neither PC can see the iPod at all (although it charges fine when connected via firewire), so the Updater says it isn't connected.

Panic increasing, I make pitiful noises and my Mac colleagues offer their OS X machines up as routes to salvation. But no dice there either: the iPod won't mount or be seen by iTunes or the Updater on either OS X machine.

I've tried force-firewire-mode on every machine, but again, nothing.

Is there any hope, or is it toast? It seems lots of others are having similar problems, which makes me think iTunes for Windows might turn out less than spectacular too...

Please, anyone with any advice, help!

EDIT: I'm discharging it totally now, to see if it will resurrect Lazarus-like when I reconnect it to the PC (which worked for someone else on this forum).

You might have a problem here where the iPod formatted to a MiPod. Are there any icons that show on the iPod when it's connected to the windows machine? I don't know if they changed this in the 3rd gens (I don't think they did) but with a 2nd gen you cannot see a MiPod on a windows and vise versa. So you might have to use it only on one machine. I'm pretty sure you can still exchange music between the two, but you won't keep the tag info.

(I assume MiPod means a Mac-formatted iPod).

I haven't formatted it at any stage. It's still a Windows iPod, as it says in the "About" menu of the iPod itself. The iPod works fine on its own by the way - it just won't connect to any computers.

I flattened the battery and reconnected it to the PC (and other Macs) but still nothing happens. I think I'm going to have to return it to Apple for repair. GG apple, way to make a first impression.

Are there any icons on the screen when you start it? Like a folder with an exclamation point, or a triangle with a battery? If there are none of these, try doing a reset while it is plugged into the wall or in the computer.

It just shows the "charging battery" icon normally, or the usual interface if it's playing a track. No weird exclamation marks, folder icons or sad macs. If there were at least I might be on to something! But no, just works away happily, blissfully ignoring any attempts to connect it to a Mac or PC.

I did the diagnostic mode checks as well, and the Firewire test was a "PASS" (rather than fail).

Hmm. this is weird. I know someone will know the answer to this. Adam probably will.

Just a hunch...have you tried it w/MacDrive uninstalled?

Since it worked in the past, it should be working fine, but it is possible that you got a bad one. There have been a few of those around a bit....

uninstalled macdrive but still the same problem. I called Apple and they're taking it back on Monday for repair/replacement.

update: well I received a brand-new iPod back two days after I sent the old one in for repair. Not bad! It's Mac-formatted, so I think I'll ignore the advice to "update" it to the PC version for now and perhaps just use MacDrive to poke around inside its guts. Plus iTunes for Windows may be coming out v.soon...
