Please tell me what to do! 3G 20 GB ipod in Win XP...

Hi please help me if you can, this is my story.

i first got the ipod and plugged it in.(i bought a siig firewire card for my pc for it) ..it said "do not disconnect"

so fine its Mipod at this point so i formatted it to Fat32 using the disk management thing in xp.
after this the ipod became unresponsive and flashed the ! and folder and the apple symbol, and then "ok to disconnect"

installed the software and when it tried to recognise the ipod in install it wouldn't..even after the format. so i reset it.

still nothing. reset it again. nothing.

so i tried to use the restore function in the "updater" software only that doesn't recognise the ipod either and it says "unable to to mount ipod". i have downloaded the latest updater as well from apple.

when i plug it in the comp recognises it as a hard drive and i can use Ephpod and transfer the music but when i take the ipod off the dock it says "ok to disconnect" and nothing else...no menu nothing. and when i reset it it goes back to the folder and apple.

is it the firewire card? is it corrupt forever? What can i do?
I'm pretty desperate at thins point and woulkd value any information

many thanks
Brandon

It's most likely not the firewire card.

I'd try uninstalling iPod Manager then rebooting. Then trying the Updater again--clicking on Restore.

I think they've changed something over at Apple as this is coming up more and more after a Windows Format.

Also, the Windows Updater program will only work if it's installed on your C:\ drive. Don't know if you have a different drive or anything, but some folks have installed their programs on other drives.

Agreed. The 3G 20 GB iPod for Windows is, how do you put this, SUCKS. I had the same problem as you did. And I think quite a number of us that own the same version of iPod were faced with the same problem when we first got the iPod. My suggestion is, "restore" your iPod in a Mac computer, convert it into a Mac iPod, and you could immediately use it on your PC after that. You'll just have to use either MC9 or Ephpd. I had some problems with XPlay, and from what I had read, it is really not recommended for 3G 20GB iPod users to use XPlay. Crashing and all.

Er, MiBuro, MiPods will not work with MC9 at all. And they'll only work w/ephpod if you get MacOpener (which I find horribly buggy, gave me the first BSOD I ever had in XP).

I've never had a problem w/my 3gen, and I'm using the same updater as everyone else.

I do think there was a rash of bad iPods out there for a bit, seems to have quieted down.

Not sure where you heard about Xplay causing crashes spcecific to 3Gen 20giger, that would surprise me. Although it always did cause Explorer.exe crashes back when I used it. 'In the Day' as it were. ;)

thanks and i will try this now

when you say installed on the c: drive, does the drive have to be labelled c: or do you just mean the system drive as my main system drive is labelled e:

many thanks

You're right about MC9, as I actually just tried it today, and MC9 had denied me. Duh. Sorry about that...

I have Windows 98SE, and those sites on XPlay that I had previously mentioned, warned me about XPlay if I have 98SE and if I have 3G 20GB iPod, which I do. I didn't realize that brandonzj was referring to his Windows XP, not 98SE :p .
