Any recomendations for quicker ripping than MMJB? Free software preferably

Does anyone know any ripping software thats free and quicker than the 5x speed of the MMJB that i'm using currently.
Any help is much appreciated.

Quicker than 5x? Most members of this forum will tell you to dump MMJB and get a quality ripper like EAC coupled with Lame or MC9. In both cases you are lucky if you get half that speed while encoding.

Most here prefer quality over speed. And MMJB doesn't offer much in the way of quality.

Right now I am ripping my Best of Doors CD's using MC9/Lame.VBR at a blazing ly fast speed of 1.1!!!

Thanks for the info, I read about someone using MMJB to encode and then MC9 or ephpod to download to the pod. Is the encoding really that bad? Also is EAC free, and the others too? Also (sorry to be a pain) are your ripping speeds a result of your software or hardware?

Its not that MMJB is all that bad. But when dealing with members of a board dedicated to the IPod, and in turn digital music, you tend to find a number of audiophiles who have very strong opinions on what sounds good and what doesn't. In the end its all up to you. You should attempt to rip a CD using MMJB and then rip the same album on EAC or MC9, take a listen and see if the difference in quality is worth the extra time it takes to encode.

The LAME encoder definitely offers a higher quality rip of CD's then say a MMJB rip. EAC is freeware and can be found along with many other progs on www.download.com.
MC 9 on the other hand has a 30 day trial period which allows you to test the full functionality of the software before buying. (The cost for the software is $40 but is a full featured digital music app that offers much much more than just encoding)

As for the speed at which I am able to rip I am pretty sure between 1.5 and 2.5x is fairly average for using MC9/ LAME encoder with the alt preset standard settings. But yes hardware does play a role in how fast you will encode but more so in the extreme sense you will see the most difference (ex. real bad PC = really slow rip)

To get a much fuller grasp of the software, settings, tweaks, tips and tricks available take some time and read through these two forums also on this board.

General boards on available software for Windows:

And the boards which given great info on using MC9 (even if its just for the 30 day trial)

Good luck!
