UK Refurb Or Buy from N.Y.
Hey all
Am lookin to get the new 15in Powerbook [1.25Ghz, backlit etc]
Refurbs usually come in at 25 to 35% off. Is it worth goin for a refurb? as this machine is ?2000 new, which is a bit too steep!!
Am going to New York for 4 nights on Boxing Day, so would it be better to get one there?? Would probs be just as cheap, but would mean a problem with customs if caught!
Could i send the instructions and receipt etc home by post, then just tell customs it was bought in UK??
Help appreciated, dont really want to get an inferior model.

Unless it's way cheaper I'd go for a UK refurb. It'll be easier if you need warranty service, it'll come with the UK charger, etc. Also while it's easy to open up an iPod and claim it's one you've had for ages (or just to bung it in the suitcase, still packed up) a new laptop is a bit obviously new - lacking your files etc. Then you have to post all the packaging and receipts and what have you.
NYC is a great place for us Brits to buy small, high value, easily portable stuff - digital cameras, iPods, flashcards, headphones, etc. but big bulky stuff is a different matter, in my view.

This may be a silly question, but how much tax would you pay on it in the UK? I think NYC is 7%.

arguably.....
or perhaps we pay through the nose for poorly delivered and inefficient puublic services? Certainly much of the defence budget (which I support, in principal) is wasted and squandered....
I suspect it's a similar story in other areas.

Last figure I saw on where U.S. tax dollars went, roughly 26% was spent on 'defense'.
But we don't want to start a flame war here.

26%? Think that's way out (it's much lower)....
Don't get me wrong, I'm pro defence but I'm not pro waste....
