Dropped Ipod! Can I fool Applecare!?
Sadness.
My question is, has anyone actually fooled the Apple Service Dept. into sending a refurbished Ipod for a dropped one? Any information about the repair service would be helpful.
In my case, My Ipod (3gen 10gb) has no physical indication of being dropped. (It landed in grass) However, The FileFolder with an exclamation point doesnt allow me to manipulate it at all. The Hard disk can be heard trying and failing when held up to my ear.
Please, any reply on how i can get my Ipod working again would be helpful. I am sad. Very sad.

Just don't tell them u dropped it...they've no way of telling otherwise unless you cracked the outer case

Call and say your 'Pod its a refurb, it has the exclamation mark on the screen, and it doesn't play.
Whether you feel the moral need to tell them you dropped it in the grass prior to this behavior is up to you but I am willing to bet if you didn't mention it there would not be much need to fool anyone if what you say is true and there is no physical indication of the drop.

Thanks so much for replying.
I am awaiting the packaging material to send my Ipod to them.
Surely the Apple Repair Service people will have some way of telling that the reason behind the hard disk not working properly was due to some sort of shock. Just how extensive is their analysis?
Does anybody have any experience dealing with the repair service?

Also:
1) I Purchased the 3rd gen 10GB Ipod new from the apple website
2)I am still under the 90-Day Warranty

I highly doubt they're going to inspect the drive closely enough to be able to tell weather or not you dropped it, the Hard drive does not work, they can't prove you droped it unless they were there at the time, so they're likely to just service it and move on (by service it I mean send you a new one)
New iPods have a one year warranty last I checked...not 90 days

Phelton:
A couple of things. Do not cross-post in these forums. I've deleted the duplicate thread.
Also, post to the correct boards. You should have posted here and left it at that.

Used to do some applecare repairs. They check it the way you and I would. Its visual, unless there is obvious external damage they can't tell its been dropped.

Well this makes me feel a lot better!
My Ipod looks great with only very tiny scratches on the back and face due to normal wear.
this brings me too another point, i wonder how the ipods in the commercials can handle all that shaking and jarring motion generated from the ecclectic dancing, while my Ipod cannot handle a slight spill. It just seems kinda weird to me that they advertise the Ipod in that way when it is such a fragile precision instrument.
Maybe a different type of warranty should be available.
lesson learned -- get a protective case.

I dont think that protective case is gonna do #####. I have the same problem with mine.. i went running and i had it in a backpack IN the case that it comes with and im guessing the up and down motion messed it up...kinda dumb considering they have cases with armbands FOR running.. once i send this thing out im not even going to try running with it.. it seems too fragile i didnt even drop mine.. im waiting for the box from apple care

Yeah, and in the commercials, they shake the shat out of them. it seems kind of fun. to dance around like that. however it costs around $300-$500.

I also dropped my iPod recently, but I think I have a 2nd Gen (it's not the latest model, but the one before; I'm still new to the iPods). I also bought it from a friend who got it from CompUSA.com.
Is there anyway I can get outta this with anything? Or am I screwed?

I should probably add that it was bought very recently (the last couple months). So it still might be under warranty, if there is one.

Well, you bought it recently, but your friend could've had it for even more months before that.
I bought my iPod from Amazon, and Apple still give me a 1 year warranty on my 15 GB iPod 3g.

yeah... i think there are gonna be a lot of unhappy people in the near future. i loved my ipod like no other, but I'm not sure it's durable enough for a mass marketing campaign yet.
mine took a tiny tumble and is done-for. waiting for the box to return as i just got it a few weeks ago...
